My brother is extremely conservative. An Orthodox Jew, he believes in personal responsibility. While he is very charitable, I would not describe him as terribly empathetic, especially when it comes to people with whom he cannot identify,
But when the economy crashed he lost his high paying job and has only gotten work as an independent contractor since. And he got Cancer. Fortunately he had kept paying into COBRA so he got the treatment he needed, and while he has other health problems, the cancer is gone. But now his insurance payments and deductibles are so high he has been worried about losing his house.
So how could he be against the ACA?
When I first brought up the subject, I really thought he would be supportive of the ACA. So I was startled when his response was "I have a huge problem with Obamacare."
Okay I know he probably doesn't love our President but I still expected this was something he would favor.
Then he told me his reason, and I was even more surprised. "Americans deserve what Canada has."
So our whole family, including my brother, could not be more grateful that my brother can sleep a lot better every night knowing that he can probably get the medical care he needs and keep his house.
When you see polls on the ACA, keep in mind that many of those in the "disapprove" column, are still thrilled it is available.
