...this is an open thread. Nothing is off topic.

Did you get a letter from your private health insurance company regarding what they're going to do since ObamaCare started?

Smileycreek and I are self-employed. We have been for decades. We are in that small group of Americans who must buy our own health insurance policy directly from insurance companies. We know there are only about roughly 11% of us that have to do this, which works out to be 33,000,000 Americans. Since that's been our reality, we had seen the cost of our premium soar year after year. That's because they've always had us by the cojones.

After paying for our policy for decades without ever using it, in July 2011 we finally decided we couldn't pay the nearly $1000 per month it had gone up to...and so we switched to a different policy that cut our monthly premium by half but increased our deductible to $10,000 per year (the deductible has since gone up to $11,000 per year.)

Since the Affordable Care Act was made the law of the land, the increases have continued to go up, but at a much slower rate than they had before. Previously the rates had ratcheted up as much as 39% in one year.

We have been looking into the various plans that are offered under ObamaCare. As you know they are all known by a different metal...bronze, silver, gold and platinum. We decided to wait a little while to see how this all shakes out for us because for those of us who are self-employed, it is most confusing to decide whether to keep our current policy or jump for one offered by ObamaCare.

Yesterday we received a letter from Anthem BlueCross that suddenly made things a lot clearer. In that letter they stated that "because of the requirements of the new laws, [they] can no longer offer [us our] current individual health benefit plan and [we] will need to change to an ACA-compliant health benefit plan, which will become effective January 1, 2014."

Notice how they call what we pay for "a health benefit plan." I find that quite telling because their definition of what we pay them for, which simply allows us to have health care should we need it, is a benefit instead of a basic human right.

They then let us know that if we are interested in a new Anthem plan we'll need to submit our change by completing an enrollment application between October 1, 2013 and December 15, 2013. Then they let us know if we don't do that they will automatically move us to a new suggested Anthem plan. And if we don't make an election by December 15th, 2013 to move to a different plan, the new plan they will automatically move us into will have a new monthly premium of $961.06 pending regulatory review.

shock

Wow! So, it looks like they are prodding us to move onto a policy that complies with ObamaCare standards. If we don't, we'll go back paying what we had been until July 2011 for a much better policy than the current policy we have with them. And yet they didn't state anything about what the policy covers that they will automatically move us into.

In other words, the old policy we felt we couldn't afford anymore...and thus went to a policy that had less coverage with a huge yearly deductible but a lower monthly payment (the trade off)...will be the new price for some policy they'll decide to push us into. We aren't going to be idle and let them push us into a pricey policy.

THIS is really a good thing. We will end up with a better health insurance policy and pay roughly the same amount each month that we've been paying for a junk policy that no longer will be allowed to be sold.

Have you received a similar letter from your health insurance provider?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
