My usual approach to election campaigns is to try to come up with a clever idea for use on the campaign trail. For 2014 however I think a different plan might be. more successful. The goal next year must be to pry some seats from the gerrymandered districts. These seats have become personal fiefdoms and that provides us with an unusual opportunity that I will present below the fold.
In a district where the incumbent is guaranteed reelection,, party affiliation is not so important. These congress people can win as independents without much difficulty. Many of them are disgusted by the antics of the GOP and while they might not be willing to defect to the Democratic Party, we might be able to persuade them to become an Independent and perhaps Pelosi could offer a non-trivial committee assignment if they caucus with the Democratic Party.
Of course there is the question of ballot access in some cases but it seems to me that it is worth it our time to try to find such a candidate. Even a single defection would open the door for others.
To locate possible targets I suggest asking some safe seat Republicans what they think of the GOP tactics and take note of those who express disapproval. Then seek some sympathetic local business person to try to get her or him to go Independent. If there is some interest then ask some powerful Democrats to offer support.
In many cases this may be a long shot but if we can get even one defection good things can happen. Keep in mind that there is very little risk to the candidate. They practically own the seat and do not have to abandon any of their principles. Going Independent removes the stain of being associated with the ugliness of the Republican Party while continuing to serve their country.
