Sen. Dick Durbin, (D-IL), second-in-command in Senate leadership, says that Senate Democrats are united
in passing a clean debt ceiling hike this week.
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s plan, as first reported by Greg Sargent of the Washington Post, would give Senate lawmakers an opportunity to vote on a “clean” increase of the debt limit—one with no extra amendments attached. [...]
Senate Democratic leaders are confident they have the votes to pass a debt limit increase, so long as Republicans allow it to pass by a majority vote. Senate Republicans could filibuster, which would require a 60-vote threshold to overcome. An aide to Illinois Sen. Richard Durbin, the top Democratic vote counter in the Senate, told Yahoo News that a clean bill would receive support from all 54 Senate Democrats, meaning six Republicans would need to join them to overcome a GOP filibuster.
Remarkable things happen when Democrats are united. Like making it easier for six Republicans who
aren't complete nihilists (or completely
full of shit like Sen. John Cornyn) to stop the nonsense and raise the debt ceiling.
Of course, if Republicans insist on nonsense, there's a way around a filibuster, too. If there's anything worth using the nuclear option on, it's preventing economic catastrophe.
Congress must stop playing politics with the debt ceiling. Please sign our petition rejecting Republican economic terrorism. Our country has no time for such petty politics.
