VA to furlough 7,000 employees, close regional offices

Oct. 7, 2013 - 09:50PM - Veterans regional offices will be closed and nobody will answer their phones beginning Tuesday morning as the government shutdown forces furloughs of 7,000 employees of the Veterans Benefits Administration.

“All public access to VBA regional offices and facilities will be suspended,” said Veterans Affairs Department spokeswoman Victoria Dillon.

Walk-ins and phone calls to regional offices are common to get status reports on benefits and to seek help. The voluntary officers from veterans organizations who help file claims are located in many regional offices, so access to them could be restricted.

While phones won’t be answered at regional offices, most toll-free numbers where veterans can get help with benefits remain open. One exception is the GI Bill call center, which is closed and won’t reopen until the VA receives funding. read more>>>

Real reason for Government Shutdown and pending Government Default, America's Responsibility and it's Not Sacrificing:

Rachel Maddow: "We got a huge round of tax cuts in this country a few weeks before 9/11. Once 9/11 happened and we invaded Afghanistan, we kept the tax cuts anyway. How did we think we were going to pay for that war? Did we think it was free? Then, when we started a second simultaneous war in another country, we gave ourselves a second huge round of tax cuts. After that second war started. The wars, I guess, we thought would be free, don`t worry about it, civilians. Go about your business." 23 May 2013

Why the use of the photo of teabag, the so called tea party owns all of this, Rep Mark Meadows (R) of North Carolina and not House Speaker, supposed to be, Boehner or media seeking hound, not a house member real house leader, chickenhawk Sen Cruz, at 43 aged out of visiting his recruiter for a decade plus and these two recent wars, this will explain:

Congresswoman Duckworth Speaks in Support of Veterans and Reopening the Government
On Thursday, October 3, 2013, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) spoke out against $6.2 billion in cuts to the Department of Veterans Affairs budget. Cuts would include programs like medical and prosthetic research for wounded Veterans, national Veterans cemeteries, the Veterans appeals board and resources to reduce the claims backlog. She offered a Motion to Recommit that would have brought the Senate passed Continuing Resolution up for a vote and have reopened the entire federal government. more>>>

UpDate: Shutdown: Get Killed in Theater, Country Says "To Bad for Now!"
Shutdown denies death benefits to families of fallen soldiers
8 October 2013 - The shutdown of the federal government is now affecting some families when they are most vulnerable, denying them benefits to help with funeral expenses of loved ones killed while serving the country.

The families of five U.S. service members who were killed over the weekend in Afghanistan have been notified that they won't be receiving the $100,000 benefit normally wired to relatives within 36 hours of the death. The “death gratuity” is intended to help cover funeral costs and help with immediate living expenses until survivor benefits typically begin. read more>>>

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Just one big pile of money, though paul thinks it is, it's budgets and what each agency might have and in their budgets where targeted to with little room to shift as that may cause even more problems!

As to any opening of the National Mall that has Absolutely Nothing To Do With The Veterans Administration, and there's a 143yr old law that has to be followed by All executive branches in these now common government lockouts!!

Who knows, maybe somebody is footing the bill like a couple are as to 'Headstart' which will only open some of those for a short period!!

Either way I on't give a crap, what I know is this country hasn't Sacrificed a dime individually as t these wars and the results of, DeJa-Vu all over again, and even this type of site doesn't like to be reminded that with deficits, low taxes especially for the wealthy who reaped wealth on blood money investments in the wars and still are, brings more expensive borrowing for the budgets, especially the VA budget the peoples responsibility!!!

Isn't closed, last I heard, the Memorials are to greatly minimize any needs for cleaning crews, furloughed, to pick up after the public as well as keeping them constantly looking like the public are responsible humans, as well as any maintenance needs. As well as to minimize the possibility of vandalism with the depleted parks service law enforcement forces, either furloughed or working with no pay, along with many other issues!!

Do you think that mother nature takes care of everything after it's built, for your enjoyment?!?!

For these so called teabags and frankly everyone else, as the wars haven't been paid for nor the results of and very very very few not only mention that but everyone stays away from even bring it up for fear 'they'll' finally have to pay, instead of the next generations if that as they ignore the issues also!!

And ignoring the veterans of, again, they also Loved what started as soon as the bush came in and with republican total control, the Rubber Stamping on the credit card started and then the two tax cuts came after the deficits had already started rising rapidly. Before 9/11, 9/11 and both wars while other policies also, and after that till the Dems took over the House and locked down some of that rubber stamping!

It's all in the records and certainly not top secret but rarely mentioned and certainly not by those that readily did it and supported the doing!!

No different then what's always been and from the same type of folks only now they labeled themselves and joined with the libertarians, Loves it's 'free war' and Especially the easy to ignore results from as to those they order into so they don't pay, while constantly using those active and sent and the veterans of with their 'flag waving patriotism?'!

But now they've choose they don't want a healthy, and hopefully better health care system, population, including their own. So they pick that as their single issue politics to close everything down, not even caring how much of the treasury is now being flushed down the toilet, wasted like that borrowed war monies!!!!!!

Bad enough that the GOP cravenly refused to pass the Veterans' Jobs Bill simply to spite the President. Now this.

I have to wonder, sadly, if this will be enough to turn more vets away from steadfastly voting GOP. I am constantly surprised by the number of vets on Twitter that identify themselves as GOP and/or Tea Party :(

Blame 'Obama', as many dems on boards like this do, if not trolls, the mentality and brain cell drain doesn't just affect those served as to their so called politics!! Oh and they'll blame the VA as well, see now that they're civilians they see it like the served, no new taxes, let the next generations worry about, though they won't neither!!
