MARCH FOR IMMIGRANT DIGNITY AND RESPECT / MARCHA POR LA DIGNIDAD Y EL RESPETO DE LOS INMIGRANTES
On October 8th at 12:30, tens of thousands will gather on the National Mall at 10th Street to celebrate Camino Americano: the rally for Immigrant Dignity and Respect before marching to the U.S. Capitol to send a message to the House of Representatives: Get Immigration Reform Done; and Get it Done Now. For our families, for our communities, for our country.
Gregory Cendana, Executive Director, Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance, AFL-CIO and Institute for Asian Pacific American Leadership & Advancement wrote yesterday:
I and other Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) leaders will join hundreds of others who will march down the National Mall to support immigration reform and take part in a civil disobedience effort that will put us at risk for arrest. We want to send a message: We are not your model minority. We are fellow Americans ready to take action to better our country for the sake of all immigrants.
The rally and march began:
...with a reading of names of those who have died crossing the border. The rally will also include music from entertainers like Los Tigres del Norte and Lila Downs, speeches from legislators such as Democratic New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez and Florida Republican Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart, prayers from religious leaders and speeches from children whose parents have been deported.
...is a culmination of events around the country as advocacy groups, businesses, religious organizations and individuals organized events in 40 states and over 150 locations – including marches, rallies, prayer vigils, community gatherings and concerts – on Saturday, October 5th, the National Day for Dignity and Respect.
Washington Times:
The National Park Service is allowing an immigration reform rally to go on as planned Tuesday on the National Mall, even though it’s closed due to the federal shutdown.
The march was allowed to take place under the group's rights granted by the First Amendment.
There might be a shutdown in Washington, but it is not stopping a massive rally in the nation’s capital to ask Congress to pass immigration reform. On Tuesday the Camino Americano: March for Dignity and Respect will harness the power of national civic and labor leaders, entertainers, legislators and immigrants rights activists, but also the voices of DREAMers and children of undocumented immigrants.
Kossack ufw just posted UFW leader, farm workers arrested for immigration reform. Please rec and tip.
The Washington Post
Marchers urge Congress to pass immigration reform; several congressmen arrested
At least 100 people were arrested, including several congressmen, after demonstrators sat down in the street in front of the Capitol. Protestors had vowed to engage in civil disobedience, and their fellow marchers cheered as each person was led away in handcuffs by Capitol Police.
U.S. Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez (D-Ill.), U.S. Rep. Charles B. Rangel (D-N.Y.),U.S. Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Keith Elison (D-Minn) were arrested.
A google search indicates the story of the day is not a rally in support of immigration reform #TimeIsNow, but another opportunity to blame President Obama for opening the National Mall while turning away and/or arresting Veterans who peacefully attempted to gain access to the Veteran's Memorial, also located on the National Mall.
