I'm a federal worker for Social Security. Tomorrow is my last paycheck, which includes only pay accumulated from work before October 1st, so 6 days. Everyone here, despite their political stripes just wants this thing to end. But the way I see it, while the GOP does not have any cards to play, neither do the Democrats if they give a clean debt ceiling increase.
Using the debt ceiling as leverage to open the government back up is the only way I see in which the Dems don't have to give up anything. Why doesn't Obama come out and say that he won't sign one without the other? If we give this up, what leverage do the Democrats have to not negotiate? Do you think we can just wait them out? That the republicans will magically succumb to public pressure? I just don't see an end to the shutdown without the Democrats negotiating or us tieing this to the debt ceiling.
