So, I am listening to the news tonight on CBC, and there has been a break in the case of Michael Stanley, a sex offender that has been wanted since October 1 for cutting off his electronic monitoring device around Lloydminster on the border of Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Who is Michael Stanley You ask?
Police said the Edmonton man has a history of taking children from playgrounds. In 2006, he was sentenced to time behind bars for assault and unlawful confinement after luring two mentally impaired boys to an Edmonton apartment. One boy was 13, and one was nine. ... He spent nine years in prison for the aggravated sexual assault, in the late 1980s, of an 82-year-old Lethbridge woman who was confined to a wheelchair.
Why should You care? ... below the fold
Well ... it turns out that Michael Stanly was found ... in the US.
How did this happen? ... well, apparently, he just crossed over the border:
“EPS detectives were able to confirm with U.S. customs and border protection that Stanley crossed from British Columbia into Washington state at the Blaine border crossing on the evening of Oct. 7,” said Edmonton Det. Chris Hayduk at a news conference held Thursday afternoon.
Well, it was a Canada wide warrant, can't really blame the border service can we?
Edmonton Det. Chris Hayduk said U.S. border officials were warned that Michael Sean Stanley might try to cross into their country, but Stanley still managed to make it through at Blaine, Washington, south of Vancouver, on Monday night.
Well then, what happened?
The Washington-based spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security was not returning phone messages because of the federal government shutdown ... The media contact for the Seattle office of U.S. Customs and Border Protection is not available because of the furloughs due to the government shutdown. A secondary phone number based in D.C. had a full voicemail inbox.
Anyone think the shutdown might have had something to do with his ability to cross the border?
