When something is “coercive”, there is a threat of force for non-compliance. I don’t approve of coercion, however, there are many, many coercive elements to our society. Traffic laws are coercive. Eviction for not paying rent or a mortgage is coercive. Homeowners’ associations are coercive. Most parenting advice is, in essence, coercive. Why is taxation being singled out as somehow being abhorrently coercive? When there are so many coercive elements to our society, how in the world could anyone expect taxation not to be coercive? In fact, we’re fortunate that it isn’t all that coercive. It’s not like you fail to pay taxes and then are immediately thrown in prison. There is a lot of time and energy spent in trying to work these things out.
I would suggest instead of demonizing coercive tax policies, work to extirpate coercion from our society in its entirety.
