I do composting at my house so I thought “Why not do it at my school?” I have a friend named Iris and we were talking about how big my compost bin is in my backyard. So me and Iris both said at the same time, “Let’s ask Mr. Nguyen if we can compost at our school!” Right after we were done eating we went straight to the office but the principle wasn’t there, so Ms. Mimi said she would write a note for him.
During dinner that night I told my parents about my idea. My mom suggested writing an email to the garden group. Here is my email:
My name is Maya and I am in the 4th grade. I am interested in composting for the school. My friends and I can make the compost boxes if you are interested in having composting for the garden. We want to compost so we don’t add too much to the landfill and because it is better for the environment. I will talk to the lunch ladies and to Mr. Nguyen to get information and to see if we can make this happen.
I went to the garden group meeting at my school and shared some of my ideas. I talked to Mrs. S who is in charge of the Garden Club and she loved the idea of composting for our school. She said that she knows a person from the county that can help me make this idea happen and she asked if I wanted to meet with them.
Mr. Dinh, my 3rd grade, long-term, substitute teacher is helping make a crate to put the compost in. Once the crate is made we can start composting.
Here are some of the ideas I have:
1. I will make posters to educate the kids on how composting works and how it helps the environment.
2. I will get a group of kids together to take out the left over food and scrap papers.
Here is the link (pdf) to some facts that I learned.
In 2010, Americans threw out 35 million tons of food scraps and only composted 1 million tons. We threw out 34 million tons of yard trimmings and only composted 19 million tons
Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate.
Finally, readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
