Some right leaning types still think they are surrendering their independence and freedom because of those who use the benefits of so-called “Entitlement” programs:
I had a friend once – - a rabid tea party type – - – who was always and forever yelling about how the “eaters” and the “takers” were robbing him by “stealing” his tax money so they could live high on the hog on government entitlement programs.
It took me a while but I finally discovered that he was living on a few of those same “Entitlements” himself.
But when I challenged him about it, he was quick to point out that the difference between himself and others was that he had “Worked for whatever he got from the government.”
I assume he meant to imply that most people on “Entitlements” haven’t worked for what they are getting – - – which I believe is the deepest pile of manure I have ever seen or heard from someone who is supposed to be intelligent – - and sane.
So here is the story as far as I am concerned:
If you are going to complain that you are having your earnings stolen by the government through the taxes you pay and that what is being stolen from you is being used to support grifters who want to live off the government for nothing – - – then do not dare to come to me later on and tell me you are accepting free handouts from the government and that you are entitled because you have worked and others have not.
The reason I am saying this is because while there are some cases where people take from the government with no intention of working for what they are getting, the vast majority who receive benefits from so-called entitlement programs are either working at low-wage jobs, trying to hold body and soul together from measly paycheck to paycheck – - or they have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own and are struggling.
It was for folks such as these that these safety nets were designed in the first place.
And while we are on the subject, I notice that a lot of the Righties who complain about these things in this manner include social security as one of those entitlements they are being robbed to pay for.
The truth of the matter is that people who get social security benefits have worked all their lives and paid into the system and are fully entitled to draw benefits when the time comes. They have earned their so-called “Entitlements.” So the Rightie arguments do not hold water on the social security issue.
There has been at least one interesting development to this most recent Republican shutdown of the government – - at least it is interesting to me:
The party that is always complaining about how much the government spends on programs they consider to be unnecessary were among the first to raise their voices when the shutdown hit and they were screaming to fund this program and fund that program!
All of a sudden it seemed to me that some of the “Big Gubmint” programs they had previously attacked as being too wasteful were suddenly very important and simply had to be funded no matter what.
I have always said and now I think I have seen the proof that the Right hates “Big Gubmint” only when it does not serve their own purposes – - – but when it does serve their causes, there is nothing better than the power of “Big Gubmint.”
To that all I can say is, “What a bunch of hypocrites!”
