Teacher's Comments from Mr. Miller:
My Students: Have you ever been the subject of the phrase "you can't learn through osmosis?" Who says you can't? While knowledge may not be able to diffuse into your or my students' brain like water diffuses through membranes, it doesn't mean we can't learn about osmosis through experiences that illustrate it.
My students are a phenomenal group of young people. They are intriguing, intelligent, wise, witty, and affable individuals with an affinity for arduous work. While the aforementioned superlatives are rarely assigned to middle school students in the impoverished region of Georgia that my students call home, these attributes accurately describe my young scholars. School wide, our students face a seemingly overwhelming economic challenge which is evidenced by the fact that over 95% of our population receives free or reduced lunch. My students have had an inconsistent history of success in science as measured by the state's standardized test. My scholars are determined to ensure that the predicaments of their past and present won't foretell their future. This year they are poised to change the course of their scholastic and economic history by committing to close the gap between their academic potential and their academic output.
My Project: With graduated cylinders, petri dishes, bromthymol blue, and potassium iodine my scholars will be able to unlock the truth behind the scientific concepts of osmosis and diffusion. We will engage in inquiry based lessons in which my scholars will learn how molecules move from areas of high concentration to low concentration in ways that makes learning come alive. We will perform laboratory experiments during which we will explore how molecules move through a permeable membrane. They will learn how plants use the power of osmosis and diffusion to carry out the chemical process that harnesses the energy of the sun to fuel life on earth.
Although information can't diffuse through the minds of my young scholars, it can develop by way of meaningful educational experiences. I would like to thank you in advance for your partnership in the effort to mold magnificent young minds. We would be grateful if you would invite others to partner with us in this incredibly important effort. These partnerships will make this project a reality we will unleash the power of osmosis to foster new knowledge in permeable brains.
