Once again, the sun has stumbled past equinox to the approximate spot it held when my dear mother was wheeled into 23rd and Pennsylvania avenue to give the world the dubious gift of me.
25 October has other awkward distinctions--the beginning, middle and end of the Glorious War to Liberate Grenada and the gut-punching loss of Paul Wellstone. Here at the Great Orange Amusement Park, I've endeavored to bring it a new meaning.
I've pulled this a couple of times before in even numbered years, with modestly satisfying results. But, thanks to the jaw-dropping incompetence of Republicans of late, Democratic prospects for state and national offices are surprisingly good. Like a lot of people here, I've been wondering what to do to help them along. Thus, the odd-year premiere of 10/25 = $10.25.
The routine's simple: in honor of the day, I'm asking you to donate in the amount of $10.25 to your favorite Democratic candidate today. In the past, I've requested donations for specific candidates or committees, but we have so many great candidates and exciting races emerging that I felt the decision of beneficiary should be left to donors.
Maybe you're wowed by Wendy. Perhaps you're determined to keep Cuccinelli out of your cooch. Maybe you know of a hot House hand nobody's discovered yet. The specific target's not important to me, just the thought of this day inching our country closer to a sane, rational, Blue future, a sawbuck and a quarter at a time.
So, if you've got a little spare folding and ringing, pick a candidate and shoot 'em $10.25 today. If not for me, then for my poor, old mom, who'd be purely tickled to see Democrats dominate government. And, lord knows, she hasn't gotten much else for her 10/25 efforts.
