As the Official Daily Kos Plumber* I often find little treasures floating among the muck of the intertubes. Just this week I found a little gem flowing off the recent list.
* not intended to be a factual statement.
If you’re not familiar with Gordon Soderberg and The Veterans Green Bus, let me give you a quick primer. Fellow kossack Gordon is a U. S. Navy veteran who has been responding to disasters for over 30 years. Sometime after working the Hurricane Katrina disaster, building a bio-diesel plant to help fuel equipment, the Veterans Green Bus was conceived. The bus (AKA Large Marge) was outfitted with solar panels and converted to run on bio-diesel and waste vegetable oil. This allows them to not only save money on fuel cost, but they can fuel up during disasters when power may be out shutting down conventional fueling stations.
During the Hurricane Sandy relief efforts Gordon and Large Marge were called into action, working with Team Rubicon to ferry volunteers from Chicago and Detroit to Rockaway beach and Queens NY. Also on the bus was $50,000 worth of tools and equipment donated by Home Depot.
Large Marge and Gordon have been noticed by the White House and were invited to an event highlighting Veterans Advancing Clean Energy and Climate Security.
Good Afternoon,
You are invited to attend a White House Champions of Change event on Tuesday, November 5th, highlighting Veterans Advancing Clean Energy and Climate Security. This is a rescheduling of the event previously planned for October 8th.
As part of the Champions of Change program, the event will feature Americans who are doing extraordinary things to empower members of their communities, protect our planet, and strengthen our security and economy. On November 5th, Senior Administration officials will participate in a discussion with these Champions to learn more about how they are advancing clean energy and issues of climate security in their local communities and how their military service has informed that work.
We invite you to attend the event as we recognize and hear from each of the Champions of Change selected by the White House.
…
Thank you,

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share part of the evening around a virtual kitchen table with kossacks who are caring and supportive of one another. So bring your stories, jokes, photos, funny pics, music, and interesting videos, as well as links—including quotations—to diaries, news stories, and books that you think this community would appreciate.
Finally, readers may notice that most who post diaries and comments in this series already know one another to some degree, but newcomers should not feel excluded. We welcome guests at our kitchen table, and hope to make some new friends as well.
