I didn't see anyone post anything about this yesterday and I thought it was worth noting that Marcia Wallace passed away on Friday after a long battle with breast cancer.
If you're a fan of The Simpsons you know Marcia Wallace as the voice of Bart's teacher, Edna Krabapple. If you're not a fan of The Simpsons, but are of a certain age you would remember her best as Carol Kester, the wise-cracking secretary of Bob Newhart on the first Bob Newhart show.
I'm a big fan of The Simpsons and I fondly remember spending Saturday nights with the rest of my family watching The Bob Newhart Show. She will be greatly missed. The Simpsons crew released a statement yesterday that her character will be retired. They had recently announced that a major character was going to be "killed off", but in yesterday's statement they said that Ms Krabapple was NOT that character and her death took them all by surprise.
Show runner Al Jean had this to say:
"I was tremendously saddened to learn this morning of the passing of the brilliant and gracious Marcia Wallace," producer Al Jean says in a statement. "She was beloved by all at 'The Simpsons' and we intend to retire her irreplaceable character."
Update: here's a very good memorium of both Marcia and her Simpson's character, Edna Krabapple:
