OK, I know I'm setting myself up for the opportunity to have egg on my face if I'm wrong, but it is really starting to look like legalization is inevitable and sooner rather than later. Of course last year's victories in Washington and Colorado made most of us think that the dam had broken and more states would follow suit. On the other hand, Oregon voted down legalization last year. However, the common wisdom is that measure was flawed and had too little regulation. This year there is a major push by a national group of activists that goes under the Name of New Approach..
If one does a google on Oregon Marijuana Legalization, one finds plenty of reason to be optimistic. Consider the following:
In a recent poll 57% of likely voters supported legalization.
The Oregon legislature is actively involved in crafting legislation to move forward with legalization. Early this year, they created a dispensary registration which spurred the opening of dozens of medical pot stores in the state. There are at least 4 within a 30 minute bus ride of my apartment here in Portland.
Finally, organized opposition to cannabis legalization has collapsed. The Oregonian, the state's largest paper and long-time legalization foe, has stated that legalization appears inevitable. They also had nice things to say about the New Approach initiative, stopping just short of outright endorsing it.
In general, nobody is talking "if" they are talking "when and how" and are looking at sooner rather than later.
