Welcome to Sunday All Day Brunch. This is an open topic thread so help yourself to the goodies and sit a spell and let us know what is new with you. I thought today we could talk a bit about clowns. I know a lot of people, including myself, are a bit leery of clowns and find them disturbing. Stephen King didn't help any when he made a clown the villain in It. He tapped into a very real fear that people have of clowns.
The earliest mention of clowns goes back to 2400 B.C. in ancient Egypt. Clowns appeared in Ancient Greece and Rome and were court jesters in medieval times. Clowns became popular in entertainment in the 1800s and Italy developed operas about them in the 1890s. They became an integral part of the circus during the nineteenth century. In the 1950s clowns such as Bozo became children’s entertainment. Red Skelton created one of the most loved clowns with Freddy the Freeloader.
Still for many of us clowns are uneasy characters. Somehow we don't really trust that painted on smile. Batman knew what it was doing in creating the character of the Joker. Stephen King in It created one of the most terrifying clowns ever.
