Today is my day off. I don't get a day off--I have to take the day off to maintain my sanity. Rather than put too much energy into writing a diary, I thought I'd keep it laid-back and relaxing tonight. What better way to do that than with music?
The theme tonight is coming-of-age songs. Not songs about coming-of-age, but songs you remember from your own coming-of-age. As I'm sure many of you do, I tend to spend a lot of time listening to music that I grew up with. The difference is that my coming-of-age music is a bit more recent, considering I'm in my mid-twenties.
Feel free to share your own music in the comments, but follow me below the fold for mine. But first, one of my very favorite songs from childhood, from Jimmy Eat World. The hopeful lyrics reflect some difficult times for the band--it was written right after they got dropped by Capitol Records. "The Middle" put them back in the game, becoming a top 40 song in 2001. I always feel just a little better after listening to this song.
And then there's this one from 3 Doors Down. I spend much of my time listening to the Sirius Pop2K channel when I'm driving, and without fail, when this comes on, I'll pull out my invisible mic and start belting lyrics. Fun fact: Drummer/vocalist Brad Arnold wrote "Kryptonite" in math class when he was fifteen.
I just heard this Creed song on the radio today. Man, I love Creed. In 2003, this particular song was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
The closest I came to going through a teen-angst phase was when I became obsessed with Simple Plan, a French-Canadian pop punk band whose music is about as "nobody-understands-me-fuck-everybody" as it gets. This song became something of my anthem in my teenage years:
Simple Plan deserves two songs in this diary. Man, I can feel the teen angst all over again!
Ending on a happier note, I'd be remiss if I didn't include some Bowling for Soup. This one is perhaps their most recognizable song:
And then there's this one...when I listened to this song, I never imagined I'd actually move to Texas.
Okay, that's enough. Feel free to share your faves below...and to let me know how my music sucks because get off my lawn. :)
