What memories of your grandparents do you have?
Was any wisdom handed down to you?
Since my parents were in their 40's and had left New York and moved to the west coast by the time I "accidentally" came along I never really had grandparents in my life. I never met the Grands on my dad's side, and he never spoke of them. I have just a few memories of Mimi and Papa on my mom's side. Both of them died before I was 7, but there was evidence of Papa's genius everywhere that still inspires me in anticipation of retirement. What an explosion of creativity he experienced once he had free time!
Papa, it seems, had been hiding an internal Renaissance man. His parents came to Canada from Wales, and then he and his brother moved to Buffalo New York and started a used car business. Once he retired, though, it was if he'd gotten permission for his real life to begin.
He started making furniture in his Buffalo basement workshop, graduating from simple pine hutches to cherrywood writing desks to elaborate grandfather clocks. I'm told he spent hours hand-rubbing oil into the wood of each creation. Each of his grandchildren has a piece he made. Then at some point the winter chill got to be too much for his arthritis, and he decided to learn how to play the organ, succeeding so well in this they featured him on a fledgling news channel as "the oldest man in Buffalo to play the organ."
Then photography caught his interest, and he built his own darkroom. A look through old family albums shows many soulful 8x10 portraits of the older kids (well before I came along). This was followed by indulging in his lifelong interest in classical music as he built his own Hi-Fi system. He and Mimi briefly lived in southern California where he cultivated a rose garden. The picture shows him during this stay.
It is in that garden that I have my clearest memory of him. He was a tall, slightly stooped, quiet and very kindly man, and always brings to mind the associated smells of cherry tobacco and butterscotch candy. In this memory I'm of pre-school age and he seems quite ancient to me. I'm sitting in the dirt contentedly playing watching ants running to and fro, and he is slowly moving along his rows of roses. We don't speak as there is no need to talk, but every now and then he looks over and smiles at me. There is a timelessness to this memory, the very old man and the very young girl somehow inhabiting the same meditative space, comfortable being entirely in the moment with nowhere else to go and nothing else on earth to do.
