Veterans have certainly come up in the world since I first qualified back in '83, when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth. Back then we were largely invisible, culturally and politically. No more. Now there's almost a National litmus test for who can most publicly declare their undying devotion to America's veterans.
If this Country actually meant any of the bullshit they shovel about respecting veterans and what they have done on 'Merica's behalf Veteran's Day would not be on the 11th of November, a relic of World War I; it would move to a much more symbolic date.
The Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
Currently, only 8 States (and Puerto Rico) maintain Election Day as a civic holiday. Making Veteran's Day fall on the legally-mandated Election Day would make that National, offering all Americans an opportunity to exercise their Right to vote, which is, after all, a substantial part of what all Veterans were supposedly serving to secure.
A more fitting tribute to their efforts I cannot imagine.
