Internationally known author Alexander McCall Smith wrote The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency in 1998. The audiobook was released in 2003 and it is just over 8 hours of listening time. The narration is by Lisette Lecat, in a quite pleasant and understandable African/South African accent. There is no swearing in this story. There is a brief description of an unhappy marriage and a minimum of violence mentioned. This a-book is suitable for Teens through Adults.

The Storyline
Mma Ramotswe, also known as Precious, grew up in Botswana, Africa. As a girl she lost her mother and was raised by her loving father and his cousin. When a bad marriage ended for her, she spent a few happy years caring for her father. Then, she lost her Daddy too. Her father had worked in the South African mines, which hurt his lungs. But he built up an inheritance for her, his only child, of a large herd of cattle. So at age 34 and a proud size 22W dress, Precious begins life without her Daddy but always with memories of him.
The first uses of the proceeds of the cattle will be for buying a home on Zebra Street for herself and a building on a road near town for her new business venture: a detective agency. She gives it the name The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and becomes the only professional lady detective in the country. She will devote herself to her work helping the people of Botswana, a country she loves more than anything, and will never marry again. After a quiet promotion, the business gains a secretary and a few mysteries to investigate.
In this story, which is Book 1 of the series, Precious takes on the cases of the Slim Shady Daddy, the Missing Married Christian, the Smart School Girl, the Bigtime Mercedes Couple, the Highly Handsome Husband (truly LOL funny), the Auto Accident Fruit, the Wily Worker Compensation, the Doctor Duty Dilemma, and the Patient Teacher Reunion (my titles). And by the end of her adventures, Mma Ramotswe may even think about marrying again--and having a good marriage this time. Her Daddy would be so happy for her!
