I consider myself properly wired for survival, and it seems like everyday something has me react; instinctively. Day after day, one thing after another – things that should have any properly wired human being react. For millions of years we have evolved to adapt and survive, and we instinctively know that some things are good and some are not. Justice is Good. Injustice is Bad.
Since forever in this country, stupid laws have been enacted with the sole purpose of putting behind bars as many people as possible. Judges send droves of people to dungeons for offences that, in a real justice system, would not even require a night in jail. In the most extreme cases, they send them to rot in holes for the rest of their life for such petty infractions as shoplifting. People rot in cages for shoplifting while all the money wizards who crashed the economy just a few years ago fly free as birds. This is not Justice.
Poor judges say their hands are tied by the law, but I don’t believe them. Their hands are tied by the salary and perks they get for being judge. Otherwise, they could decide not to apply an unjust sentence, and see what happens. They could show the middle finger to the overzealous prosecutors and tell them to shove their cases up their asses. And if this doesn’t work, they could always resign. If only their consciences spoke loud enough to tell them not to send people in dungeons and forget about them.
One can hope that the least crusty and corrupt judges would act like that for Justice. But it takes courage to stand up for Justice, and this country is full of cowards. If you are looking for one, chances are the nearest police station is filled with them.
Coward cops who feel threatened anytime someone moves. Or at least, that’s what they keep saying to account for everybody they shoot, beat, or electrocute. If you are so scared of everyone all the time, you shouldn’t be a cop.
Any coward with a weapon is dangerous though. Because for them, anyone who moves their little finger is a potential threat, especially if the finger is black. One Big Coward we can talk about these days is the man who recently shot – in the face – an unarmed 19 year old woman who had come to his house to seek help.
But the Ultimate Cowards are those who use drones to kill and wound men, women, and children living thousands of miles away, and of whom they know nothing. Or who accept this without question, because someone once told them it was somehow necessary to go and kill people on a whim, for our "security".
Justice is Good, but it takes courage to stand up for it. When we let the cowards make all the calls, they inevitably pull us down with them into an unjust and unsustainable world.
