Sen. Mary Landrieu's
"keep your health plan" bill has one more cosponsor: Sen. Tom Udall (D-NM). Udall didn't release a statement explaining why he was joining the effort,
but signed on Wednesday.
Udall joined the bill without issuing a formal statement, but Senate Democrats are becoming increasingly vocal about the need to change the law. When Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) introduced the bill earlier this month, she said Democrats need to pass legislation to make good on their promise that Americans could keep their health insurance if they like it.
"We said to people that if they have insurance they like, they can keep it," Landrieu said. "We didn't say that if they have insurance they like that doesn't meet the standards or that meets the minimum standards, they can keep it."
There are now eight co-sponsors for Landrieu's effort. Those who are up for re-election in 2014 are Kay Hagan (D-NC), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Mark Pryor (D-AK.) and Udall. The others are Sens. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Joe Donnelly (D-IN). Senate leadership, so far, has taken the position that the administration's
executive level fix to the problem of cancelled insurance policies is adequate, and hasn't announced any plans to bring the legislation to a vote.
