Hi, all. Here's the weekly speechifyin':
Welcome again to Saturday Morning Home Repair blogging, where we talk about fixing houses, the things in them that are supposed to work for us, and fixing them up. An ad hoc cadre of building professionals and gifted amateurs attempt to answer questions that arise from readers, and offer encouragement and advice for those inclined to do things for themselves, if they can. We all do a lot of things, collectively, and can probably help out with insights from our vast experience.
Or sometimes, we just gab.
Anyhoo...
So, we finally got around to doing something temporary with part of the kitchen. Doesn't that sound decisive and monumental? Our impermanent and partial work stemmed from a hole in the countertop linoleum that absolutely had to be fixed right now crashing into an inability by the other CJB and me to come to agreement on a final scope of work.
So. We did what we do in these situations and compromised. We decided to replace the linoleum, backsplash, sink and hardware, leaving the cabinets, under-the-counter dishwasher, possible wall relocation, etc, for another time.
The Mister wants big change. Me? I'm actually good with the way things are, logistically. We'll figure out.
When we moved in, we loved the old, red "cracked ice" linoleum, and we allowed it to completely define the room. We found a reproduction online. It was $430 for a 4 x 8 sheet. We knew that, since this is temporary, we weren't about to spend that for lino that would be ripped out. So we went with a - what? - Wilsonart, I think, in yellow. Turned out to be darker than it looked when it was a 2" x 2" sample. Still okay, though.
We bought a nice Kohler sink. That is the one thing that will survive into the next version of the kitchen. Everything else - wood, lino, subway tile, edgings and sink hardware came in just under $200 all together. I think we got a pretty good look for that expenditure. And, of course, the white and yellow brighten the kitchen so much, that I don't think we'll go back to the red. The cracked ice pattern comes in yellow, as well. So, we'll see.
I'm having trouble inserting text between pictures, so I'll just line the pics up and let them tell the story. Also, I've tried re-sizing, and I get this tiny size and blow-the-margins huge. Don't know why I'm so challenged today. Yeesh.
