In the State of New Jersey getting a Driver License is not easy. Graduated steps for the young are real.
Forbidding Mother's driving privilege was a challenge. I begged the local constabulary to pull her over and Summons her for a fog line violation. It happened every day. They never pulled her over. I was hoping for a negotiated settlement of a Ticket. She surrenders her license and we call it even. Judges in NJ have the power to forfeit licenses.
Absent that I had to go the doctor route and her doctor was not wild about the idea. I insisted and he prescribed a Driver Evaluation and, trust me, those things don't come cheap and are not covered by insurance.
I promised Mother that the evaluation would not be her last drive. I was expecting a marginal pass or a marginal fail. It was a major fail. I kept my promise. It was her next to last drive.
I put a club on her car. She accepted it without violence. The paperwork took only a week. The annoying thing is that her NJDL wasn't enough ID to get a non driving ID at the License Branch and the new ID cost money even though the DL was not expired.
