What are your festive plans for today?
Before I get cranking on cooking later today I'd love to hear what is in store for you this day.
As many of you know, I'm American Indian, Navajo to be exact. My knowledge gained in the last two decades has come to show me that this day is not the history I was taught as a child. The myth that the pilgrims had a lovely dinner with the local "Indians" and lived happily ever after now sticks in my craw. But, this day for me also has a long personal history, before I learned the truth, of family-reunion-childhood memories of American heritage foods. Foods I've come to love. So today, I'm going to take advantage of the national holiday that gives many people the day off so they can attend my dinner. It will be a small gathering.
The foodie in me is excited, for today we'll have roasted free-range turkey thighs. I'm so over dry turkey breast meat. You have to brine/salt the hell out of it to retain some moisture. Not much different than cured meat which is far too high in sodium. So I'm going with the meat that is flavorful and moist without much additional seasoning. I'm going to roast it on a bed of mire poix to create a base for a future meal of turkey soup. Yum. There will be no canned food today. I make everything from scratch. Two kinds of stuffing. One with mass quantities of free-range turkey livers and the other for those who are faint of heart about the former. ;) Scalloped organic Yukon Gold potatoes, sprinkled liberally with fresh chopped rosemary. Organic sweet potatoes, baked and then brushed with an apricot glaze. Organic green beans sauteed with almond slivers and chopped fresh sage. I'm going to experiment with blue cornbread as a nod to my heritage. The experiment part of it will be adding juniper ash from the Navajo reservation. My relatives burned some for me this past Sunday and overnight mailed to me. The ash makes the bread calcium rich and makes the blue color darker/richer plus the flavor is completely enhanced. I've only had the ash in blue corn mush. But the mush without the ash is not as intriguing, in fact, it's boring. So wish me luck. I hope it works. I'll have a loaf of fresh bread from a great bakery on hand, if not. Then, of course, the mandatory pumpkin pie. I must have organic fresh whipping cream, with scraped vanilla bean pods and a tiny bit of sugar. A great holiday meal which we'll probably duplicate on 12/25.
Tomorrow is
American Indian Heritage Day. In the past, I've celebrated it with a quiet family meal of my traditional foods, such as, mutton stew with blue corn kernals and grilled Navajo flat bread. If you're interested, you might find some inspiration in some
modern adaptations of American Indian ingredients I've put together. They're easy recipes and I've provided photos, of course. ;D

Try Some American Indian Recipes This Thanksgiving
Are you looking for a new dish to try this year? Why not try something even more traditional than apple pie — recipes from American Indians. We have several unique recipes for you to try, including delicious green chili stuffing.
From wild rice to lima beans, these recipes use traditional ingredients that can easily be found at a local grocery store. We want to share these dishes not only because they taste good, but also because we hope they will give you an added appreciation for the contributions made by American Indians to our national cuisine.
Enjoy your holiday weekend!

Asheville, NC gets out the vote!
The following is a brief roundup of the DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project's fifth outing. We've been setting up every Tuesday for the last five weeks at Earth Fare, a natural food store at Westgate Shopping Center in Asheville. We have a nice spot on the patio outside the store. This week with no icy wind and much more moderate temps. Oh it was cold alright, just not stupid cold. Back to having three of us was great. LamontCranston, David and Myself received many thumbs up and "thank you's" from passers by and shoppers and more than a few questions as to why we were doing this now. "Didn't we just have an election?". We officially re-registered one voter and took advantage of the interaction to do some Daily Kos evangelism. And here is a tease for next week. It involves llamas!

tmservo433 delivered a great event. Almost 30 people attended what tmservo433 calls the first session of the evening that lasted until 11:30 P.M. The second session of the evening included about ten more people lurking outside the door and some working as hotel staff inside the room. So after the meet-up ended, on-lookers from the hall and hotel service people wanted to talk about what they overheard coming out of the ballroom. For example, the round table discussion about the importance of increasing the minimum wage resonated with the waitstaff and they chimed in about that with strong opinons. A ballroom dancing couple applauded the progressive discussion they could hear on the other side of the partition. This event united progressives within its reach!
Please visit tmservo433's diary for written details on this terrific event! You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.

Please visit tmservo433's diary for a description of the rest of the attendees which were mostly non-Kossacks, but folks who should be there, such as, State Legislator John Wright. tmservo433 gathered a great group of Progressives and hopefully we can get a few more of them to join us at DKos. Kudos to tmservo433 for reaching out and uniting like-minded folk in Missouri!
