Do you have an accent?
I was born and raised in Georgia and lived the first 41 years of my life there, except for the four years I spent at college in North Carolina. As a result, I have a Southern accent. My students always say I sound like Dr. Phil. I tell them they are a bunch of Yankees who can't tell a Georgia accent from a Texas accent. I also tell them that I have more hair than Dr. Phil but he has more money.
When I was in high school, I decided that Southern accents were a sign of ignorance (probably from observing my classmates), and I worked very hard to rid myself of mine. At college, people would rarely guess that I was from the South. But after I lived in Sandersville, GA for seven years and then Jasper, GA for 10 more, my accent had returned full force and has never left me, even though I have been living in the Midwest for over 20 years.
The truth is that I have several levels of communication that I employ and a continuum of accents that I use with them. When speaking formally, my accent nearly disappears. When I am joking around with friends, I sound like Jeff Foxworthy: "If ya mama keeps a spit cup on the ironin' board, you might be a Redneck." When I speak Southern, I say "reckon" and "y'all" and "fixin'" and "cain't." My wife, a Southern belle, can say "Mike" and make it sound like two syllables: "Miiii-iike." And she does. Often.
Even in Georgia itself, there are regional quirks. In Jasper, they say "tar" and "far" instead of "tire" and "fire." It's a hillbilly thing, I think. In Sandersville, they're your Larry-the-Cable-Guy good ol' boys. An aristocratic Southern accent is different from the speech patterns of your ordinary cracker, however. I always like to listen to a genteel Southern accent. My wife's great aunt who died recently had one of those.
My father had a slight German accent, having been born and raised in Vienna. His English was as good or better than mine, however. He rarely made grammatical mistakes, except when someone asked for him on the phone. Instead of saying, "This is he," he would say, "That's him."
I enjoy foreign accents of various sorts. I have had many wonderful Hispanic and Latino students over the years with lovely accents. I had a Chinese student last year who had a charming accent to go with her utterly charming personality. Her English improved by leaps and bounds over the year. A few years ago, I had a German exchange student, one of the top five smartest students I have ever taught. She spoke flawless, nearly accentless English. While at our school she took French and stopped by Mrs. Dragon's room after hours to learn some Spanish, too. She was a genius when it came to language. She was beautiful and funny, too. I figure someday she'll be Chancellor.
But back to local color. My aunt used to drop her r's sometimes. So "corner" became "cona." My mother, a Southerner if there ever was one, used to pronounce "bomb" as "bum." As in, "I worked at the Bell Bummer Plant during WWII." I never figured out why she pronounced the word that way, but we had some fun with it. Of course, in her later years, she would always call "Chik-fil-a" "Chik-a-fil." In my family, we still say it that way as an inside joke. I will note, however, that we haven't been to "Chik-a-fil" since the owner came out of the closet as a raging homophobe.
Of course, African Americans have their own range of accents. There are very countrified ones and very urban ones. Southern ones and Northern ones. Obviously, Black English is heavily influenced by the slave experience, but it is seasoned with a few African constructions as well. Modern Africans tend to speak English with a British accent, thanks to imperialism.
Here in Indiana, accents are very diverse. They range from Southern accents near the Kentucky border to Chicago accents in the northwest corner of the state. I have noticed that here in Kokomo, people tend to use the past form of verbs when they should use the past participle. For example, "If he hadn't did it, he wouldn't have got in trouble." They also add r's, as in "I warshed the clothes last night."
I must admit, I do love to hear a cultured British accent. English is truly beautiful with those rounded vowels. But I love the fun and irreverence of an Aussie accent too. And the clipped, delicate Indian (from India) version of English is quite pleasant. Irish and Scottish accents are also entertaining, even if they can border on the unintelligible at times. Canadians are peculiar, eh, with "aboot" instead of "about."
Still, there are all kinds of accents right here in the good old US of A. New England accents come in several varieties. Maine is different from Boston, for example. In the Southwest, Texas boasts several different variations on a cowboy theme within its own vast borders. Louisiana offers the unique Cajun patois, while the Great White North of Minnesota shows its Northern European roots, don't ya know. I don't know if any West Coast accents exist. I suppose Valley Speak doesn't count. But of all the accents in the United States, is there anything more obnoxious than a Brooklyn accent? Fuhgeddaboudit!
So how about you?

Asheville, NC gets out the vote!
The following is a brief roundup of the DKos Asheville Voter Registration Project's fifth outing. We've been setting up every Tuesday for the last five weeks at Earth Fare, a natural food store at Westgate Shopping Center in Asheville. We have a nice spot on the patio outside the store. This week with no icy wind and much more moderate temps. Oh it was cold alright, just not stupid cold. Back to having three of us was great. LamontCranston, David and Myself received many thumbs up and "thank you's" from passers by and shoppers and more than a few questions as to why we were doing this now. "Didn't we just have an election?". We officially re-registered one voter and took advantage of the interaction to do some Daily Kos evangelism. And here is a tease for next week. It involves llamas!

Organizer tmservo433

tmservo433 delivered a great event. Almost 30 people attended what tmservo433 calls the first session of the evening that lasted until 11:30 P.M. The second session of the evening included about ten more people lurking outside the door and some working as hotel staff inside the room. So after the meet-up ended, on-lookers from the hall and hotel service people wanted to talk about what they overheard coming out of the ballroom. For example, the round table discussion about the importance of increasing the minimum wage resonated with the waitstaff and they chimed in about that with strong opinons. A ballroom dancing couple applauded the progressive discussion they could hear on the other side of the partition. This event united progressives within its reach!
Please visit tmservo433's diary for written details on this terrific event! You can join Kansas & Missouri Kossacks by sending a Kosmail to tmservo433.

Kudos to tmservo433 for reaching out and uniting like-minded folk in Missouri!
