I have been dealing with a serious health issue for a while and so I will be retiring in June. At that point my 63 year old husband will lose my insurance as I am sure I won't be able to afford to cover him under cobra where I must stay.
So I have been trying to figure out how to handle an event that is beyond open enrollment. Also in the name of saving money I would like to insure our twin sons who are 24 and who have been working a while and we don't list them as dependents on our tax return. We previously insured them with private insurance policies which are not aca compliant. It was MUCH CHEAPER than putting on the family plan - like $400 a month cheaper - and the coverage was similar. So I approached healthcare.gov but the answers they gave were so complex and confusing that I am concerned for people in my situation who are not used to dealing with insurance like me. Maybe Kossacks can help me clear it up after the orange thing. Thanks for any help in advance
This doesn't seem well thought out. The answers to the questions from the site was not clear. I was left with a chat screen I could not print and vague cut and paste answers from the agent.
My income counts even if I am not on the policy because we filed jointly in 2013 - do I have this right? I can be excluded from coverage but not excluded from paying? what?
I have to double insure my husband because me retiring is not a "qualifying event" like a job loss or a birth or a divorce (all that was listed) so in june he will be SOL - do I have this right? He is retired so he doesn't have insurance and is under medicare age.
My original idea was simple - get my husband and the boys their own insurance policy - as they are only 24 but we haven't claimed them for years - the site said that didn't matter - is that right? Seems if my income counts because we filed jointly the fact they are not dependents should be a barrier too but it isn't? confused at why sometimes we are tied to the tax return and sometimes we are not.
My next idea was to file separately from my husband but then I was told it was last year counted not this year -so how to file in 2014?
do the boys income count? I could not get an answer for that
ACA needs to be fixed - it has issues - too much complexity and confusing rules.
agents using a flowchart cannot seem to answer situation questions.
I appreciate any help offered
