Several years ago over at the old Street Prophets we learned it was possible to meditate together, that it was just like any other group meditation, even though we were all spread out at different locations. For a while we had a regular meditation group, and it was nice to have people to meditate with; then after a while it fizzled out as meditation groups sometimes will.

Today it occurred to me that there may be interest here in the larger pool of active members at Daily Kos for a regular meditation group so I am posting this short diary to see if there is any interest.

One of the problems we had in the earlier meditation group was there was not a large number of participants and we were spread out through all four US time zones, so it was hard to find a time that was convenient for every one. For a while we tried to make it so people could join in whenever it was convenient for them where ever they were, and due to the small number of participants, it meant we lost the dynamic of the group meditation. In my experience it is possible for people to join into an established group meditation when ever and wherever they are, but there needs to be a core group meditating together at an appointed time for that to work.

So it would be open to all, believers and non-believers of all stripes; people could meditate in their own tradition or model. People who have never meditated and would like to learn would be welcome as well.

I was hoping there might be enough people to commit to sitting together at an appointed time, and others could join in when it works for them. Or another idea might be to have a range of times on a particular evening to accommodate for different time zones. I picked Monday to post this because suspect it might be the night with the fewest competing activities for people, but all of this open for suggestions. And none of it needs to be set in stone, we can try it for a while to see how it goes and make adjustments as we go along.

There is a lot I don’t know about administering a group, so all suggestions and ideas will be welcome in the comments. So how about it, is any body up for a DKos Meditation Group?

UPDATE: The meditation group diaries will be posted to the Dkos Sangha Group, so following that tag will put the diaries in your Stream. Next Monday I'll post the first meditation diary using the poll results to select a time that will hopefully be as convenient as possible for most people; please be sure and select your time zone in the poll if you plan on joining in. And again, nothing is set in stone, we can make adjustments as we go for any suggestions that may arise.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
