Received this e-mail today from the Progressive Change Campaign Committee regarding Senator Elizabeth Warren's (D. MA) bill that prohibits employers from looking at people's credit reports during the hiring process and I am happy to see Senators Ed Markey (D. MA) and Jeanne Shaheen (D. NH) as co-sponsors:
Today, Senator Elizabeth Warren is offering a new bill that prohibits employers from looking at credit reports when hiring.

Big financial institutions often abuse consumers and wrongly downgrade our credit.

Also, people looking for jobs shouldn't get penalized for losing their home in the 2008 Wall Street collapse. We should be helping them succeed.

Sign our petition showing Warren's colleagues that the public supports her bill -- and wants them to support it too.

When employers use credit reports in hiring, they often reject very qualified people. This practice disproportionately hurts minorities and the working poor, and keeps people unemployed.

Our nation should want these people getting back to work, not penalizing them.

Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Jeanne Sheehan (D-NH), Ed Markey (D-MA), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) all understand this and have signed onto Warren's new bill.

Can you join us in urging the rest of Warren's colleagues to support her bill, and help people go back to work? Click here.

We'll be elevating local voices across the country so members of Congress and media hear our message. If you have a personal story about being hurt by our credit laws, you can tell us on the link.

Thanks for being a bold progressive.

P.S. The (truly) progressive think tank, Demos, has been advancing this idea for a long time. After signing the petition, you can give them and Warren kudos on Twitter.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
