He's such a dreamboat.
Conservatives continue to heart their once-bitter Russian foes, because
that's just how the American right rolls these days.
In his syndicated column today, Buchanan lauds Putin as a leader of “conservatives and traditionalists in every country” who are resisting “the militant secularism of a multicultural and transnational elite” who push “abortion on demand, homosexual marriage, pornography, promiscuity, and the whole panoply of Hollywood values.”
Pat's been on that kick for a while, so it's not a brain spasm on his part, he really is one of the religious righties that has a deep-seated love for Vladimir freaking Putin. The irony, of course, is that we of the land of hard realities have spent the last few decades trying to convince the Pat Buchanans of the world that the Soviet Union no longer exists and it isn't really necessary to keep pretending they do in order to have a ready global enemy—it was a slog, to be sure, but the good news is that the lesson has mostly stuck, save certain dimmer quarters of Congress. The bad news is that apparently all that was ever needed to convince conservative Americans that the Russians were good people is for a few Russian leaders to prove that they could be every bit as homophobic and doctrinaire and moralistic and oppressive of minority groups as the worst of our own right. You know,
godly.
If the enemy of my gay enemy is my friend really is going to be a core element of this new conservative foreign policy, I don't even know where to go with that. So I'm just going to leave you with Pat Buchanan enthusiastically probing Vladimir Putin's thoughts on whether America is now an evil, immoral nation.
President Reagan once called the old Soviet Empire “the focus of evil in the modern world.” President Putin is implying that Barack Obama’s America may deserve the title in the 21st century.
Nor is he without an argument when we reflect on America’s embrace of abortion on demand, homosexual marriage, pornography, promiscuity, and the whole panoply of Hollywood values. Our grandparents would not recognize the America in which we live.
Moreover, Putin asserts, the new immorality has been imposed undemocratically. [...]
While his stance as a defender of traditional values has drawn the mockery of Western media and cultural elites, Putin is not wrong in saying that he can speak for much of mankind.
Looks like we've got ourselves a fifth column. Keep an eye on this guy, when the Russians finally unleash their long-secret plans and invade America I think Pat here's gonna be flying the flag of the other side.
