2014 will soon be upon us, and with it comes the midterm elections. There will be a lot of talk about what these elections will be about and what the results will mean. Afterwards, each party will spin the results to justify how America really agrees with their position even when they vote against that position. I would like to take this time to describe the America that I believe in. Feel free to disagree.
I believe in American exceptional-ism. In My America, this carries the implication that the citizens are also exceptional. Exceptional people aspire. Exceptional Americans want to work. Exceptional Americans, by definition, are not takers. Exceptional Americans will still want to improve their lot in life when minimum wage is enough to support their family.
Exceptional American women do not casually consider abortion a form of birth control. Exceptional American women do not carry a pregnancy for 7 or 8 months and then just simply change their minds about it.
In My America, there are people who are free to pursue happiness with people of the same sex. In My America, there are people who are free to not like this. Those people who do not like this do not have to do it. They do not have to keep their mouths shut about it. They are free to denounce and complain, but they are not free to prevent it.
In My America, people get help when they need it. Americans are exceptional, remember, and as such, they don't cheat. My neighbors picked me up when I fell. I did not even ask. When my neighbors fall, I do not wait for them to ask.
In My America, my faith is stronger than law, and it does not need additional protections from it. Likewise, it does not need additional protection from other faiths. In My America, faith, morality, values, freedom, God, and the Constitution are not the provenance of a party, an ideology, or a religion.
In My America, we all came from somewhere else, and yes that even includes the Native Americans if you go back far enough. Nobody gets to erect a "Keep Out" sign. In My America, we are all Real Americans rendering the phrase meaningless.
In My America, I believe in a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. The Wrong (in a previous post, I said I would never again refer to them as "The Right) like to mention President Lincoln. If government truly is of, by, and for the people, then how can it be the problem?
In My America, we pay our bills. In My America, a progressive tax scale is not penalizing success. It is an acknowledgement that they can pay it forward. The wealthiest Americans are not going to take their ball and go home. They are home. Any country they might move to that provides anywhere near the lifestyle they can get here charges far more in taxes than we do.
