which I informed the community I had begun in something new at age 67.
My first class was Monday.
I have since taken classes on Thursday, Friday, and today. I have a one month pass and I am taking advantage of it. I had not planned yesterday, but with school closed it seemed a good time.
All of these are listed as level 1 Vinyasa flow classes, at Flow Yoga Studios on NW P Street in DC.
The first thing to understand is that a level 1 class presumes some familiarity with the terminology and basic positions, which I largely lacked at the start of the week, although I am learning.
I cannot do everything in the class. I am 67, not in the greatest condition either as to my breath, my upper body strength, or my flexibility. I have been able to do more than I expected. My class today had five of us for whom this was at most the 5th class, with one person taking his first class ever (although his wife has been doing yoga for years). In that class the instructor was very sensitive to our needs, and since it was a relatively small class able to also help us individually - in my case with extensive use of blocks and blankets to compensate for my lack of flexibility.
I have signed up for a series of introductory lesson with a superb teacher, although that will be at another studio in Bethesda. I am also going to get some individual instruction to help me get to the point where I can do some meaningful practice on my own.
As I write this I am in my local Starbucks, where I encountered someone with whom I overlapped at Haverford starting in 1964 and his wife whom I have known since I moved to Arlington in 1982. She took one look at me and said I looked more relaxed than she had seen me in years, so perhaps it is making a difference?
I have also lost 5 pounds this week, but I suspect that may be as much do to the dietary changes I am also making, one of which is no longer drinking beer at home.
One reason I have not blogged as much this week is because of traveling to yoga, the classes, and getting home. Besides, I really did not have that much of value to say, or I would have found the time.
Anyhow, now that I have shared, feel free to move on.
Oh and in case anyone is interested, my wife started back up with physical therapy yesterday which is a positive sign.
Peace.
