Oh, this is heavy, Doc. I mean, it's like I was just here yesterday.
You were here yesterday, Marty.
First of all, I want to thank
pgm01 for stepping up at literally
beyond the last minute to cover. I'm serious about that dinner, but as perhaps you can tell I have a very full dance card. I'll try to work up some potential dates soon.
I can easily tell you what happened. My dK system time is set to PT and has been for 8 and a half years nor am I about to change it now. When I hit the publish at a particular time button I was frankly astonished to see that it was giving me the current time ET. Oh, so they're reading my zone off my IP, says I; and I quickly shifted from a -3 publication time (7:55 pm, I can do the math) to one that reflected ET. I can prove it- here.
Clearly, I have a lot to learn.
One lesson I think I should take away from this experience is that I really ought to create a group to support TDS/TCR so at the very least if publication times get screwed up people can check the buffer and give it a jog. It will take me some time to sort out the details, but if you're interested in participating in such a project you can start indicating your interest tonight.
No pressure.
Now as I told you Monday, the reason for my absence is that I was attending a meetup for participants and readers of Naked Capitalism and Corrente upstairs at the Old Town Bar. It was some do.
Over 50 people showed up, pretty evenly divided between Traders (you could tell because they wore suits even though it was freezing), economics and other professors (we had a representative from UKCM and quite a few from Columbia including the guy sitting next to me who's specialty was Assyrian history), Occupy Wall Street Veterans and sympathizers, and what I would call 'regular' people if your idea of regular includes authors and IT specialists. Yves may or may not recognize me the next time she sees me, she was much in demand; lambert greeted me like an old roommate you haven't seen since college, though it was just last year I met him for the first time.
They serve burgers ($15), dogs, sandwiches, and specials, along with assorted bar appetizers. The bathrooms are frigid, but it wasn't quite cold enough to freeze your urine before it hit the bowl.
Not quite.
So tonight we start with Scarlett Johansson. While she's played other parts, I know her best as the Black Widow from Ironman 2 and The Avengers. I would prefer that she talk about her next appearance in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but I very much suspect that most of the conversation will be about her voice role as Samantha in Her which is up for several awards.
Jeff Skoll was eBay's first employee and first president. He's best know in the entertainment world for his production company Participant Media that has produced some laudable efforts, but also some neo-Liberal propaganda like Waiting for Superman which praises privatized Charter schools that every serious study shows don't outperform regular Public education results despite the inherent cheating of being able to select their students instead of serving the whole population and the naked cheating of falsifying test scores (I'm looking at you Michelle Rhee).
I expect Stephen will ignore the fact he's a philosophical Randroid.
Only The Daily Show has next week's guests posted yet. They are-
* Monday 1/13: Roger Ross Williams
* Tuesday 1/14: Tim Gunn
* Wednesday 1/15: Robert Gates
* Thursday 1/16: Steven Brill
So I'll tee it up Monday. I also have (mumblety, mumble) Digests to churn out and the longer I wait the harder it gets. This weekend we have 4 playoff games to liveblog in addition to the usual content. I also have about 3 computers sitting in the queue and numerous personal projects.
Sigh. No rest for the wicked.
