As I get older, ideas come and go, but mostly go.  So, I thought I would just take a moment to pass along something, I kind of think would have an impact on a young person.  This probably isn't possible in this day and age, but wow, this would have had a lasting impact on me.   I don't even know if health education, sex education is taught in school anymore.  I remember some pretty lame classes, and one or two films that most slept through.
So, here's my idea.

What if your child was in high school, and for one week, each homeroom, or what ever it's called now took a turn, and had each student wear a stick on herpes sore on their upper lip for the day?   Just one day.  At the end of this week, each student would get to walk around with their very own herpes sore on his or her lip.  It might actually create the need to have each person really think about herpes, what it is, how you get it, and how long it lasts.

I don't think the word "herpes" existed when I was in high school.

If I were a principal I would want my students to really understand what the words "FOR LIFE" mean, when it comes to viruses, and how easy it is to get one of these "sores for life"

The other issue I would hammer into the brains of young students, would be credit card debt, and what an APR is.    These kids are going to get something in the mail one day, and it's going to be a "free" credit card, with a 26% APR, and it's sad that most people don't understand the basics here.

I know, not really a diary.  Just something I would do if I were king.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

when I think of what info HS age SHOULD be getting about personal finance, and what they DO get (zip, eh?) -- I go all CT about the 1% plotting to keep that info out of the curriculum, the better to "company store" the peons! infuriating.

I'm 66, retired, have NEVER bought insurance (don't ask about Medicare), have only ever bought one house, only buy a car about once every 20 years -- a lot of those are because I KNOW I don't know how to handle money, how not to get rooked or conned by bankers, sales people, insurance companies, etc.!!!

which Herpes were you talking about? garden variety "cold sores" or the "nasty" kind?

"Chimene", Herpes is Herpes by any other name.  When I was in active medical practice it was not uncommon for a patient with genital Herpes to give the history of a sexual partner who gets "Cold Sores".

Following the classification HSV into two distinct categories of HSV-1 and HSV-2 in the 1960s,[4][5] it was established that "HSV-2 was below the waist, HSV-1 was above the waist".
