You have read or heard it a million times already: Chris Christie's people caused a humongous, four-day traffic jam in Fort Lee, New Jersey, as payback against the mayor of that town because he refused to support the governor's bid for re-election.

And yet neither you nor I have seen any evidence that this is true. If you disagree then post the evidence you have in a comment to this diary.

The meme I outlined above, if un-true, must be stopped dead in its tracks so the real cause of this criminal act can more likely be determined.

Yeah, yeah, I know...this is not much of a diary but I am sick of stupid things becoming entrenched beliefs when there is no evidence for them.

A typical example of this nonsense comes from the Washington Post in an article with the dramatic headline "E-mails suggest Christie aides jammed traffic as political revenge":
But guess what? There is no evidence for that in the article! Go ahead, click me and try to find it!

There are many government officials in New Jersey who did not support Christie for governor. Why was the mayor of relatively small Fort Lee targeted instead of someone else? The idea is ridiculous on its face.

EDIT: Given that there is also no evidence that a real traffic study was ever conducted, I firmly believe that Christie's office set up this traffic jam for nefarious purposes and I want to know what they were. But that is a subject for anothe diary and I would prefer to keep this one tightly focused.

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Speculation and suspicion about the motivation for the lane closures and who the real targets were has moved well beyond the mayor of Fort Lee. You can read about them in any number of diaries here.

    •  Is that true in the media? (0+ / 0-)

Are you talking about speculation here on DailyKos or/and the media? Getting Kossacks to move beyond Fort Lee is a good first step but my main interest is for the media to catch on and I dont think that has happened yet. Of course, they simply may not want to catch on!

and attempted to placate me (into thinking we are on the same side) by calling Christie a "jerk" like some 8 year old kid throwing a temper tantrum would do. Seriously? Look... All I care about is the MEME you are spreading, which is really an "anti-meme" sort of meme.

You wrote that this particular meme, which dailykos is not promoting, and which just so happens to be hurting Christie, "...must be stopped dead in its tracks..." ~ (suggesting that this would in some way "help" incriminate Christie) ~

            hmmm...

Those are the words you used:
            "Dead in its tracks"

... and those are some pretty strong words about what you want to "stop" ... and yet your words expressing your alleged desire to find out the truth are, shall we say, not nearly so strong:
"...I firmly believe that Christie's office set up this traffic jam for nefarious purposes and I want to know what they were."

To put it bluntly, in specific terms, these words are passive, and the other words are a command.

FACT: If this statement of yours were true...
"...I firmly believe that Christie's office set up this traffic jam for nefarious purposes and I want to know what they were."
...then you would have updated your diary to include links to the diaries THAT DISCUSSED what those very "nefarious purposes" probably are that you claim to so care about... but you did not, which means that you could care less about what Christie's real purpose was.

            •  Your "my way or the highway" attitude... (0+ / 0-)

              ...is very tiresome.

Just because I write things that you do not like does not mean you have the ability to correctly read my mind.

I said that the idea, "if true", must be stopped dead in its tracks. That gives a different meaning than the one you attempt to put in my mouth.

Passive words, commands...seriously? Methinks you doth parse too much.

Me calling Christie a jerk to placate you? Believe me, sir, I am not trying to placate you. I altered my diary to address valid concerns that you raised because they were valid. I did not do so to make you, specifically, feel better.

              Facts:

              - I care what Christie's real purpose is.
              - Christie is a jerk
              - I would not be surprised if Christie is shown to be a criminal but I have to take back my statement that he 'likely' is. I do not know that for a fact.

The Fort Lee meme may very well be hurting Christie but if hurting him is your goal, then I suggest that there are many other reasons for the traffic jam that may be true and that these will hurt him much more.

May I ask exactly what you think my purpose is with this diary?

              •  What's tiresome is having to repeat myself (0+ / 0-)

and then you ignore my points.

And now you are criticizing my "...'my way or the highway' attitude..." ... ???

                Seriously?

Dude.... any intelligent person who is genuinely interested in discussing the prevailing theories that motivated Christie's actions, would (you know) ACTUALLY DISCUSS the "prevailing theories" in their diary, they would not be telling people that we need to stop an old theory "dead in its tracks"... nor would they require people to prove an old theory.

Why are you not discussing the prevailing theories?

Why have you not even mentioned one of the prevailing theories?

Why are you not providing helpful informative links on the prevailing theories?

NEWSFLASH: You cannot "stop a meme dead in its tracks" .... that's just not how the viral internet media works. You cannot stop a meme, you can only replace it, and the replacement must address the underlying "cultural desire/need" ... and in this instance, the need is to know the truth of his motives.... and so you better provide a more compelling motive, if you want your new meme to replace the old one.

One last thing, this attitude of your believing that you can just "bully" the internet into "stopping a meme dead in its tracks" is laughable, and really does remind me rather a lot of this Punk Christie's dealings with the media. Everyone knows that this punk is guilty as shit, so you can't just take away one motive without providing the viral world with a replacement motive... which is exactly what the Daily Kos community is doing... BY POSTING DIARIES of the prevailing theories for motive.

                •  Then don't repeat yourself. (0+ / 0-)

Why did I not mention the prevailing theories? Because the prevailing theories are not what my diary is about. It is quite simple, really.

As for me thinking the Internet can be bullied, I never suggested that. My diary probably did not make this clear but my focus was as much about what is happening in the MSM as on the Internet.

Look, I understand that DailyKos is sometimes (often?) infiltrated by rightwingnuts  posing as Kossacks but I cannot really understand why you think I am one of them when I clearly stated in the original version of my diary that we are dealing with a criminal act.

But I do thank you for trying to keep DailyKos clean so please do continue your diary policing. I would just suggest that you do it in a slightly less belligerent fashion.

                  Good day.

                  •  If you are genuine in your intent, (0+ / 0-)

...and the only reason I wrote that was because I DID want to give you the benefit of the doubt. I was trying to explain why I had a problem with your diary.

Listen, Seemabes, if my manner seems harsh, or my "policing effort" seems overly zealous, you might want to consider that for me, this is not just a some distant "news story" .... I have people who are very close to me who live in that area.... so I take what this fuckin' scumbag punk kid Christie has done rather personally.

...and the one from yesterday was put together quickly due to time constraints. I certainly agree with you that my diary would be more effective if other theories were discussed in it and I am glad many of them have been brought up in the comments.

I am glad we both have the same intention here, which is to get to the bottom of this criminal act, find out why and how it happened and punish those responsible, one of whom I also have very, very, very little doubt is Christie. But the evidence must be found and used to prove the case.

I followed the links in your above diary. So you were also in Manhattan on 9/11? I was working in a building on the South Street Seaport when the first plane went in. I also witnessed many acts of kindness on that day as I made my way to a subway so I could catch one of the few trains home to New Jersey on that afternoon. As for Fort Lee, I often do my shopping at the Japanese supermarket nearby. Great community!

Here is a repost of my comment on another thread (to someone else, not you):

I did 5 days of volunteer work 1/4 mile north of ground zero at what came to be known as "the field of tents" .... I ran the field of tents ... we moved more supplies to ground zero than all other arteries combined .... we were it ... on Saturday night 9/15 the former/retired Chief of FDNY Station#1 took me passed all of the checkpoints to stand 50 yards away from a 7 story high pile of rubble.... the stench of death reeked .... I felt like I was on another planet .... and the buildings around me were said to be "structurally unstable" ... and the fire truck stood dark and silent... "All members of her crew were dead." the retired FDNY Police Chief informed me ..... shall I go on ?

Yeah, I was there.... I still have nightmares.

And in the days that followed, every time a plane flew overhead, people stopped and looked up.... eerie... frightening.... not the just the plane, but how everyone had become instantly skittish about planes.... even when they tried to hide it ..... it was there, palpable, in the air.....

and Christie imposed a 4 hour traffic Jam for 9/11..... for the entire freakin week? So anyone who has PTSD due to 9/11... will have flashbacks. Talk about some fucked up shit.

After laying down to go to sleep that night, I vividly remember shooting back up again trying to figure out what was more amazing: that the towers had been destroyed or that they had ever really been there in the first place.

I have long realized that the closer - and in your case, the longer - you were to lower Manhattan, the exponentially worse the experience of the aftermath. But of course, not nearly as horrible as for the ones that never made it out.

I want to tell you this.... seeing the look in the eyes of each person who was returning from ground zero was this "WALKING DEAD" zombie-like almost catatonic look in their eyes .... you know, it's that "thousand mile stare" that they speak about when a soldier has seen too much killing on the battle-field.

  •  Here's an alternative (7+ / 0-)

I contend that the real goal of the "TL24 test" (the lane closures that caused huge traffic jams) was to skew a legitimate traffic study the Port Authority was conducting on the eastern side of the New Jersey toll gates.  They were counting cars driving away from all 12 tollbooths on the upper deck.  The purpose was to see if the 3 lanes dedicated to Fort Lee were disproportionate or not.  By eliminating the Fort Lee access to two of the lanes, it caused enormous delays for those who usually use the 3 lanes, but had to wait to pass through one tollbooth.  It greatly reduced the number of cars passing through the only open lane during the relevant time period.  Large numbers of cars that normally would have passed through before 10AM were still stuck in Fort Lee when that hour was reached and the count stopped on each of the 4 days of the obstruction.  The goal was to justify a PERMANENT reduction in the number of lanes dedicated to Fort Lee, at a time when construction had just begun for a massive billion dollar development project directly adjacent to the entrance to the 3 lanes.  A development whose value would plummet if lanes were permanently lost.  If this bogus and unauthorized "TL24 test" had succeeded in dishonestly skewing the figures for Fort Lee-originated traffic, the town would have lost a lane or two permanently, something Christie's group could have used as a bargaining chip with local Democrats, particularly Loretta Weinberg, the State Senator who at the time was blocking Christie's ability to appoint Justices to the New Jersey Supreme Court.  Christie could have told her in private, "let me nominees onto the court and I will use my influence in the Port Authority to restore your normal access to the bridge."  Access to the 3 lanes after all, is the entire motivation to want to live in the new, huge multi-million dollar development right at the foot of the bridge.

Do you have links to these?

I have seen the comment about kids being the children of Buono voters but that could just show their lack of regard for some people and not necessarily anything to do with an election.

  •  What you seem not to ... (5+ / 0-)

... understand is the difference between "a theory" and a "fait accompli." You don't have to accept any theory, as this is early on in the investigation. Some prosecutors don't even provide motive in murder trials, and that's after years of searching for evidence. I liken this matter so far to this chapter of an old Agatha Christie novel:

There's a man with a knife in his back in the next room. He's dead. All of the suspects are in the study, and now the media/New Jersey Legislature is walking back and forth across the study questioning, one by one, each person's whereabouts and potential motives.
In other words, the chapter you are looking for hasn't been written yet. As for the individual theories so far, I'll play your game:

    1.  Christie Did It to the Mayor on the Bridge With a Traffic Jam

The Mayor said that he believes he was approached for his support by Christie or someone in his office before the last election. Christie flatly denied it! We have an apparent contradiction here that merits further investigation. Although Fort Lee is only the 67th largest city in New Jersey by population, it is obviously located in a strategic financial and transportation location. Somebody told the Port Authority to start blaming the Mayor on the same day the traffic snarl started. Why not blame the New Jersey Department of Transportation? Why not say it's a "federal grant thing"? Who has the most to lose because traffic in Fort Lee has become a disaster? Christie has shown a habit and pattern of using his political influence to harm people who haven't toed his line.

    2.  Christie Did It to the State Senator on the Bridge for Judicial Nomination Retaliation

The charm of this theory is the timing. The Bridget Kelly email arrived the day after Christie had publically called the Democratic State Senators "animals." The Leader of the Democratic State Senators happens to be from Fort Lee. Christie has shown a habit and pattern of using his political influence to harm people who haven't toed his line. This was an especially hurtful wound to Christie's pride, as he had to let go of a Republican judge who was married to a member of his close staff. Would a person like Chris Christie let a slight like that go unpunished?

    3.  Chris Christie Did It on the Bridge For All of the Above.

This is my working theory for now. Obviously, Christie was enraged with the State Senator, and he had not received an endorsement from the Mayor of Fort Lee. That town may not have been the most "Democratic" of the jurisdictions in New Jersey, but their leadership seemed to have a uniquely strong set of backbones. The best way to crush a rebellion is to crush the rebel leaders.

    4.  Christie Did It on the Bridge for the Money.

You've heard the old adage: Follow the money. There was a lucrative development nearing the funding stage at the time right at the foot of the bridge. What better way to get concessions from the developers or a couple of comfortable sinecures for relatives and friends than to shut down two-thirds of that development's access to New York City?

You don't need immunity for a mistake.

Although not evidence per se, it is the kind of "evidence" that gets prosecutors to call him in for questioning.

        5. Christie Did It on the Bridge Res Ipsa Loquitur

There's a theory one can use in certain legal cases called res ipsa loquitur. It means that "the thing speaks for itself." My guess would be that based on Christie's history as a bully, his vindictive nature, his pattern and habit of punishing others who don't toe his line, and if there is no actual smoking gun, there will be res ipsa loquitur. What other reason could there possibly be?

A person exercising their rights under the 5th Amendment and/or requesting immunity is not admitting anything nor are they necessarily guilty of anything.

But is is far less costly for a person to have immunity.

Think of it this way - immunity is like wearing a belt and suspenders at the same time - it doesn't hurt.

        •  Sorry, don't buy it. (0+ / 0-)

First off, I never said pleading the Fifth meant David Wildstein was admitting something. So, you are beating a dead straw horse there.

As for not being guilty of anything, Wildstein would be the first in my experience, and I've instructed many witnesses to plead the Fifth and cross-examined many others.

Think of it this way:  Wildstein painted a big fat target on his back. He is begging to be charged with a crime. That's how the real world works.

Rand Paul is to civil liberties as the Disney Channel is to subtle and nuanced acting. On biblical prophesy: If you play the bible backwards, it says, "Paul is dead."

I am just saying the payback against the mayor idea does not make much sense and that there isn't much evidence for it.

The 5 ideas you outline make much more sense and I thank you for adding them to this thread.

  •  Here's a name that has come up once or twice (0+ / 0-)

I'm left wondering if Christie is the most powerful man in New Jersey. Governors come and go. The New Jersey Blue Dog Democratic machine is still there.

Follow the money. Did someone get a piece of the action?

  •  How about this crazy conspiracy theory (0+ / 0-)

Instead of imagining Christie is the perpetrator, act like a Republican and think up a crazy conspiracy theory they can blame on Obama.

    Part 1: Clear Christie.
Say the GWB traffic pattern was changed around the time of the 9/11 anniversary due to a non-publicized terrorism threat and that the FBI setup a sting to capture the terrorists, but they didn't catch anyone  and are still trying to find and stop them, which is why there is still an ongoing investigation and secrecy. Then say that no one on the Governor's office or the Port Authority can explain the real reason due to National Security rules.

    Part 2: Blame Obama.
Say that the "real" reason that the FBI didn't catch anyone was because there were no actual terrorists. Then say that the closure was Christie honestly believed in an elaborate hoax concocted by the Democrats in NJ and DC and was trying to protect America. Then say the Dems did this because they really fear Christie will win if he runs in 2016. Then claim this conspiracy goes all the way up to the president.

I almost with the right wingers would run with this, would be fun to see Christie squirm while trying to decide whether to act like he's a player or the one who got played.

There is circumstantial evidence, the sort of evidence that is used to send people to prison or the gallows, for the Mayor, the Senator, and the development project. There is evidence that there was no study.  The reference to chidlren of Buono voters is at least interesting.

If you are claiming innocence, propose a defense other than your claim that there is no evidence. As was said of Richard Nixon, what did he know and when did he know it, except the act here is a bit more serious.

And contemplate signing your real name.

      I wrote:

"The meme I outlined above, if un-true, must be stopped dead in its tracks so the real cause of this criminal act can more likely be determined."

I would not have referred to a "real cause of this criminal act" if I was claiming innocence. I may not be the clearest writer in the world...but I am surprised that one would think I am claiming innocence for Christie in this diary.

  •  Does it really matter why they did it? (0+ / 0-)

Whether payback against Ft. Lee or retribution against the Senate minority leader really doesn't make a whit of difference.
Laws have been broken,  and there was an attempt to cover it all up.
Either Christie knew or he didn't know, and if it's the latter, he is running an office so cowboy that bureaucrats feel they can shut down the nation's busiest bridge without checking. He's done.

  •  Stealing Schools. (1+ / 0-)

Specifically, Christie's staff was looking for a news story that would take headlines and television minutes away from nerw Jersey schools as the new year got rolling.

Christie had two school scams rolling:

-- Stealing 5% of NJ public schools so they could be "privatized" for profit

-- Moving the rest of NJ's 10,000 severely disabled students over to "privatized" schools

The latter project increased costs for Bergen County from $43,000-a-year per pupil up to $90,000+-a-year per pupil. The bills were going out and anybody paying real estate taxes would understand that one.

Bills for these kids are paid by local Boards of Education. State of NJ runs the program. Christie turned it into a hog trough.

    10,000 times a $50,000 difference is $500,000,000 a year.

The former school grab was discovered by Education Law Center with a FOI catch. Christie intends to steal 5% of public schools. Take them over by the State of New Jersey as "failed" and fire the teachers and fire the administrators and "privatize" them.

OMG what all could be stolen with that one.

Traffic jam last September was timed to hit school opening.

Yeah, a press diversion that womped a Democratic Party mayor hit all the buttons. What this achieved with NYC television was a wipe out of other Bergen county stories -- no room to make the complicated Christie school thefts a news priority.

  •  Who cares what their motive was? (0+ / 0-)

...there's clear evidence of actions taken for no other purpose than impeding traffic and causing problems for the mayor of Ft Lee, for whatever reason, and knowlege of these acts reached into the Governor's office, public officials have publicly expressed a fear of retribution when questioned about why they complied with orders from above....

I just don't care if there's a specific link between these acts and any particular benefit anyone involved received, the acts in themselves are crimes, and enough to upset governor Cartman's applecart....
