Global climate is a closed system which traps, holds and distributes energy that manifests itself in weather. When extra energy is added to the climate system, the system behaves more energetically. Weather manifests climatic conditions according to local cycles. Extra energy in the form of trapped heat promotes greater extremes of both high and low temperatures and of storm incidence and intensity, along with other warming effects like ice loss, sea level rise, etc. Fuel combustion by human civilization injects extra CO2 into the climate system, trapping more atmospheric heat. QED. More frequent, higher incidences of weather extremes are accordingly observed.
I need not await research into every corner of these propositions. I am convinced by Occam's Razor, observation and knowledge that in the physical universe, the extra heat in the atmosphere isn't going away, but is doing something, that is, the extra heat energy is causing mischief with local weather all over the World.
Extreme weather inevitably manifests from a more energetic climate system. Think of it as a shaken snow globe or boiling pot. How hard you shake or turn up the burner make a difference. Weather extremes will come at both the high and low end as always, but with higher amplitudes. So it is that the same Winter brings record cold to the Great Lakes and Eastern Seaboard of North America while producing an unprecedented mild weather, that is, extreme high temperatures, in Russian Siberia. In 2012 the hurricanes drove far North of their usual targets, as with Sandy. Then the just concluded 2013 hurricane season resulted in unexpected ebbing of storm activity.
It's all about extremes. Don't let anybody tell you its Global Warming. There's warming, all right. Trapped heat is the engine; the trap is rising atmospheric levels of combustion-sourced CO2.
What people have to live with day to day is the weather extremes resulting from Global Weirding, weird weather. More and more, people will have to endure extreme heat or cold, floods and droughts, extreme winds and storms, etc. Conditions will fluctuate more wildly. There will be periods of relative calm, but no real respite while the CO2 problem remains unsolved.
Extreme weather victims should understand that extreme cold weather is inevitable, some times, some places, along with every other weather extreme imaginable so long as human failure to control carbon release continues to drive up the heat trapping capacity of the Global climate system.
My spouse often wears a t-shirt that says "Keep Austin Weird" in tie-dye colors. I wish it had a footnote that said, "but Keep the Climate Sane!" Sadly that is not to be. The oil and coal and gas barons have won enough of their war on climate scientists that the World's carbon performance until now and into the future shows too little hope for improvement. Weather extremes of all kinds are the future now, even in those inland places protected from seacoast loss due to sea level rise. One can only hope that the situation is addressed before loss of the Antarctic ice gets added to the seacoast mess.
As I near retirement, even though I expect to live out most of my remaining bit of the 21st Century in the middle of North America, I fully anticipate seeing Springs with tornadoes like hardly ever before seen and Springs with hardly any at all. I'll see frequent Summers deliver brutal heat, unusually severe floods, droughts, and every extreme of weather imaginable. The Winters will tend toward the mild but gloomy side, with unseasonable patterns of precipitation. Sometimes the cold will be uncommonly severe. Reports will be frequent and widespread of most violent, largest, highest, fastest, soonest, latest, slowest, lowest and smallest and calmest [fill in the blank] since a long time ago.
For me personally, I expect to find it all tolerable enough and see no great likelihood of much personal loss. I'm working on my personal CO2 footprint and it's coming along. I don't much care for the planet we're leaving the kids, though.
