Seems pretty innocuous, no? Democrats believe in choice, Republicans want to limit those rights even in horrible cases like the ones the ad discusses. And it's not as if Virginia Republicans are a particularly progressive bunch. Look at who they ran for governor and lt. governor last year. So ... why are they pretending to be so upset?
“Words simply fail when I try to describe how offensive this is,” said Pat Mullins, chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia, in the statement. “Jennifer Wexton is running to represent all of the people in the 33rd Senate District, not just liberal Democrats like her… if Jennifer Wexton is truly writing off people who disagree with her as no better than rapists, then she has no business in politics at all.”Wuh? Interesting take of some other ad that wasn't this one. But one dumb Republican wasn't enough. So they found another one.
“I’ve seen the kind of sick, unrepentant predators that commit rape firsthand,” [Dinwiddie County Commonwealth’s Attorney Lisa Caruso] said in the statement. “Comparing political activism to rape is simply beyond the bounds of decent behavior. Jennifer Wexton should take down this ad, apologize, and withdraw her candidacy.”Ha ha ha ha! What kind of corroded comprehension skills got her to that conclusion? Lisa Caruso needs to work on her basic English skills.
Meanwhile, our job is to point and laugh at GOP hysteria over the ad and demands that Wexton "apologize" (for what again?) and "withdraw her candidacy". And after we do that, let's chip in a few bucks to her candidacy, because as you can gather from the above, the alternative would be pretty horrific. (And it is.)
