Former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who became a conservative heartthrob when he retook the Virginia governor's mansion for Republicans in 2009, has
a new accomplishment to add to his resume:
Former Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell and his wife Maureen were charged in federal court Tuesday with illegally accepting gifts, luxury vacations and large loans from a wealthy Richmond-area businessman who sought special treatment from state government.
McDonnell, not surprisingly,
says he did nothing wrong. But however his case ultimately turns out, it is somewhat amusing to note that the GOP's two big gubernatorial stars of 2009—New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and McDonnell—are both now in hot water. Who could possibly have predicted it?
