Texas Rep. Louie "America's Dumbest Congressman" Gohmert appearing on
Fox & Friends? Yep, still
a circle of hell.
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) on Thursday said that the federal government uses welfare to "lure" women into "servitude."
"We need to encourage and incentivize young women, not declare war on them by leading them into ruts like the Democrats did. You want to see who cares? It's the people that try to help them reach their potential, not lure them into servitude away from it," Gohmert said on "Fox and Friends," while arguing that welfare checks make women dependent on the government. "So, the problem is the government, not those single moms."
It's 2014, and these people still believe the hoary tales of welfare queens and the like. No, really, the entire reason Gohmert was appearing on
Fox & Friends was to defend his previous remarks on the House floor about all the poor Texas girls getting knocked up so that they could live their lives on easy street:
"I heard the story over and over and over, how as a young girl in high school she was bored with high school and someone suggested, 'Well, why don’t you just drop out of high school and have a baby and then the government will send you a check?'" he said on the House floor.
Please read below the fold for more insight from Rep. Gohmert.
This was while Louie Gohmert was a district judge, mind you, and if the thought of long lines of Texas high school girls apparently planning to live the high life of being on Texas welfare doesn't frighten you, the thought of Louie Gohmert being an actual paid district judge ought to scare you right out of your socks. Gohmert may not have intended it this way, but the only moral to his story that I can glean is that in his neck of the woods, eye-watering stupidity is more common than crabgrass. If his story is even true—and hello, this is Louie Gohmert we are talking about, and he may have imagined the entire thing as backstory for his Mario-Luigi-Princess Peach fan fiction trilogy—then it would seem to me that perhaps we should be giving every high schooler in the state one free welfare check, no questions asked, with the invitation to figure out how the hell you and your imaginary little junior are going to live on that generous stipend for the rest of your days.
Especially when you've got people the likes of Louie Gohmert hovering around telling you how damn lucky you've got it and how feeding that little brat is only going to deepen his culture of dependency. Makes that old "care for this chicken egg for one week" sex ed lesson seem downright quaint, doesn't it?
"The left tried to say I was attacking single moms," he said. "What got me is, for so many young women the government -- meaning well -- lured them into a hole or a rut they couldn't get out of."
I'd say generalizing all poor single moms to be lazy slackers who chose that lifestyle for the juicy government benefits counts as attacking them plenty, but as I am not America's Dumbest Congressman I cannot say for certain exactly what point he thought he was trying to make. I do know that giving congressmen six-figure salaries for whatever it is they do has not worked out well at all, and has probably done severe damage to America's dumb people by encouraging them to suckle forever at the government teat instead of going off to get real jobs.
