"I am a republican and I don't want your son to die.  In fact, I don't know your son or you so it makes absolutely no difference to me whether he lives or dies.  As a result, I wouldn't give the loose change in my pocket to help you, him or anyone I don't know.  Nothing personal, but I simply do not care about your plight, and in return, I will never seek assistance from you. Seems like a fair offer, right?  Apparently, there exists a substantial number of liberals who think like you and I encourage you to hit them up for your financial needs."

I write other places on the web and receive many e-mails. I have been called every name that your Mom would wash your mouth with soap if you used such language.

I wanted to share part of this real e-mail with you because the sender is young and
represents the true feelings that many Republicans have against those of us on the
left.

I could fill two pages of e-mails I get like this. They come from all ages of people. They
are all men, and white. Their picture comes with the e-mail.

My response to the sender of the e-mail was that I cared about HIS family. I wanted
all good for them, but suddenly my computer took over and said "we live in two worlds,
why don"t we agree to disagree?" I saw no way of changing him.. I did tell him I was
NOT asking for money, simply we need more services for the Mentally ill.

There are millions of Americans who don"t vote and apathy for everything going on
in our world is their common trait. Their world consists of them and only them.

I am struck by the Republican decision to "double down" on their plans for America.
It really is a simple one:attack us. I have a 20 minute movie sent me that compares
us to Stalin,Hitler, and that our side is after their freedom. I see a plan in our future to
go back to the 1960 era, we need to push back on the mean poison that seems to have
taken over the souls of millions of people in America.

We seem to be starting 2014 in the same spot as 2013. We are at war. We need to spread our message that WE are the folks that will make life better for all.

I am old enough to tell you,THIS is NOT part of the normal debate between political
parties. This time it"s from your neighbor who could care less about you.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You will be frustrated. You will not change his mind. He will have an answer for everything you say.

For example, he will say that when he pays his taxes, he pays his share of the cost of the highways and public safety departments, FEMA, libraries, etc.

He will say that you, on the other hand, are asking for "extra" stuff. He may insult you--blame you, even--for needing "extra." Or he will say that if he ever needs "extra" stuff like mental health support--he is willing to pay for it on his own.

He will not be able to imagine a time when he might not be able to pay for everything he needs.

If he is able to imagine such a time, he believes with an unshakable faith that he will bravely do without anything he can't pay for, without complaining. He believes he will never, ever want to be beholden to anybody.

I urge you not to waste your time with him.

  •  Insurance (5+ / 0-)

I always wonder about those folks that say they don't want help:  Do they buy fire insurance for their house?
According to their philosophy, they should not, and when their house burns down, that's just their tough luck.
They should also send the fire department away when they try to put out the fire.

    •  Police, Courts, Jails and Prisons, etc. (6+ / 0-)

Somehow the conservatives believe that the elements of the state they desire MUST be paid for and everything else can just wither away.  They don't understand and have no desire to understand that collectively providing things like police, courts, judges, jails and prisons is cheaper than trying to do it out of their own pocket.  That's why those functions have been transferred over to the state over the centuries.  Those programs they want to terminate with extreme prejudice are also less expensive and more effective than the alternatives they prattle about, but, since they don't think they need them NOW, they are glad to end them NOW.  We'd see how long they'd last in a society without police, judges, courts, jails and prisons, since they show themselves to be the original pants wetters.  Can you imagine the whining if they had to pay every time they called for their arms-men to protect them and the price kept increasing.  Ultimately they'd learn that armed thugs learn they can take the money without providing the security.  Roman society demonstrated that 2200 years ago and documented it.

We are seeing polarization seep into our public institutions, but a lot of that's driven by a process of mass media growth, flattening and fracturing over the past forty years.  On the other hand, I find it hard to believe that the American body politic in 2014, which hasn't experienced an episode of significant civil unrest since 1991, is somehow more at each other's throats compared to the Days of Rage.  None of the social indicators suggest anything of the sort.

We've seen media grow, flatten and fracture over the past forty years.  Fox News wouldn't exist without cable.  Breitbart wouldn't exist without the Internet.  The right would be relegated to boutique weeklies and a handful of newspapers.

On the other hand, simply because we didn't have the media to expose what a politically polarized public doesn't mean that said public didn't exist.  The social and political differences between segregationists and integrationists alone make small any disagreements we have today.

  •  John Donne wrote "No man is an island." in 1623 (2+ / 0-)

following a long illness which brought him close to death at age 52.  (52 was relatively old for a person living back then.)  It's part of a long meditation on mortality, and the need to recognize our interdependence.

The young man who emailed you thinks he is an island; maybe he allows a few friends and family onto his island, maybe not.  He seems to still think nothing bad will happen to him which is beyond his ability to personally surmount on his own.

Odds are fair that he'll find he's wrong.  I suspect if he gets into real trouble he'll appreciate help from someone else.  Then, if he's not a complete jerk, he may come to understand that 'no man is an island' and we should all help each other out.

It would be nice if he didn't have to personally experience something before he could have empathy.  It reminds me of the Republican politician who was against marriage equality until his son came out, and now is in favor of it.  I guess that's better than the jerks who still can't embrace their gay children, but it's not that much better.  And in the case of the Republican politician, I note that he still seems to have no empathy for anyone else, so he's still essentially stuck in selfishness.

I'm beginning to think that these Tea Party types mostly hate the government because their minds can't embrace anything bigger than their family and closest friends.  That viewpoint was useful back when humans lived in small groups, but it's completely outmoded today for all but a handful of people living in remote areas.

The reporter, thank God, asked her if she wasn't being selfish.  She became angry and said definitely not, because she wanted everyone's taxes reduced to almost zero, and it would only be selfish if she just wanted HER taxes cut.

I didn't want my son to go blind in Iraq and George Bush didn't care, so I took as many dollars and benefits as I could possible dig up when he came home damaged - thankfully, I was able to get my son hospitalized in California which I have absolutely no doubt made a difference.

I have had Republicans call my son a coward, not a real soldier, because he was a mechanic welding armor on all the vehicles that Dubya didn't think needed shielding. When a Navy Captain over a small medical clinic discovered he was an EMT he was 'drafted' to work carrying a 75 lb medic pack. A buddy described watching him run out into the night amongst all the explosions as 'surreal, like watching a movie about war'.

Conservatives may laud the war but they say horrific things about my son's service; hell, he may have saved their own kid's life. I do not understand the callousness that I read and hear. I never will.
