There appears to be a plague of subpoenas up and down the East Coast that is sending Republican lawmakers scurrying. This time the subpoenas are afflicting North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory and 13 state legislators. All were last seen hiding behind legal shrubbery.
NAACP and others say McCrory blocking discovery in elections lawsuit
Voters and organizations challenging the 2013 elections-law changes contend in federal court documents that Gov. Pat McCrory has not turned over information in a timely manner.
The state NAACP, League of Women Voters of North Carolina, American Civil Liberties Union, the U.S. government and others filed documents in federal court late last week asking the court to compel McCrory and N.C. elections officials to turn over documents related to the new law. They have asked for a hearing in federal court next week to discuss the matter.
The request comes after 13 N.C. lawmakers have asked for the quashing of subpoenas....
Apparently the lawmakers ::cough:: feel that their legislative immunity is now under attack from subpoenas
seeking email and other correspondence related to the recent transformation of North Carolina's election process.
The 13 legislators hoping to never come out from behind the legal shrubbery and explain themselves to North Carolina voters include Rep. Thom Tillis, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, and Sen. Phil Berger, leader of the North Carolina Senate.
They want the subpoenas "Quashed! Quashed, I say!" in the name of legislative immunity. Obviously, they are feeling very repressed.
Hope the good people of North Carolina can repress them some more. We'll find out soon. "A hearing to decide the matter has been scheduled for February 21."

But even before that crucial court date, big things are happening in Raleigh, North Carolina this Saturday, February 8th. Thousands are gathering to help take back North Carolina from those that would deny basic rights to North Carolina's people.
Our own Denise Oliver Velez and fellow kossacks will be joining Saturday's Moral Monday March on Raleigh. Dee wrote a brilliant, uplifting diary about the upcoming demonstration, the Moral Monday Movement, and its importance to us all.
Marching forward together: From Selma to Raleigh
"....Next stop on the justice train is Raleigh, North Carolina, where a massive demonstration will be held on February the 8th.

Forward Together, Moral Monday, The Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HKonJ) has grown up and out from North Carolina, moved to South Carolina as Truthful Tuesday, and it has spread to become Moral Monday Georgia as well.
The call is out for everyone of faith, of conscience, of good will, to rise up once again and move forward together to demand our rights to live in a just and equitable society, stripped of racism, sexism, homophobia and economic inequality...."
