Mitch McConnell has got to be sweating bullets about now. Yet another poll shows the Kentucky senator and Republican leader
trailing in a close race for reelection:
The Bluegrass Poll, conducted for WKYT-TV, the Lexington Herald-Leader, the Louisville Courier-Journal, and WHAS-TV, finds the Kentucky secretary of State [Alison Lundergan Grimes] taking 46 percent support to Sen. Mitch McConnell’s 42 percent among registered Kentucky voters. [...]
The survey shows that McConnell remains deeply unpopular in the state, numbers that have given Democrats hope of picking up the seat in November. A full 60 percent of voters disapprove of the job he’s doing as senator, while 51 percent have an unfavorable view of him.
If you're keeping count, this makes
11 polls showing the race tied or McConnell trailing slightly. The good news, from McConnell's perspective, is that there's still time for a nasty campaign to define Lundergan Grimes negatively—in this poll, 29 percent of people were neutral toward her and 18 percent had no opinion. That gives a lot of room to raise her negatives. And there's no question Mitch McConnell is the sort of person who will go negative with enthusiasm. Now he'll have desperation to fuel his enthusiasm.
