Trumpeter Swans winter in Washington state and British Columbia. Their numbers each year vary tremendously. This winter the swans have graced us generously. These photos were taken on a shallow quiet bay in the Salish Sea one January afternoon. The swans were resting and grooming. As I watched, the fog thickened and the sky darkened to golden light as the sun began to set. It was a peaceful moment.

The swans could see me on the beach, but appeared unruffled. The only time I saw the swans become nervous is when a harbor seal swan by. The seal kept its distance. These are large birds.
