Bill Nye the Science Guy vs Creationist Ken Ham. Creationists sitting on state science textbook selection panels. Far, FAR too many schools teaching it openly as science. It's a serious matter that scares this science PhD when I think about the damage this does to present and future generations of free-thinking, intelligent scientists. However, I can't write a serious diary tonight because I've got a Serious Other Issue to diary tomorrow, so instead I offer up a collection of songs about science. Hop on your pet dinosaur and follow me below the orange pile of fossils traps of Satan after a word from our sponsor...
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either to topcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
- Galileo Indigo Girls OK, mostly the song's about reincarnation, but via consideration of Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer and heretic Galileo Galilei. Fun fact... the Indigo Girls recorded this album in Bearsville, NY. About 5 miles from where I grew up.
- Ordinary Day Peter Mayer This song was inspired by Mayer reading The Elegant Universe, a book on string theory. Many of his songs have an environmental/science-y aspect to them, and if you get the chance to see him please do!
- Mammal They Might Be Giants "So the warm blood flows with the red blood cells lacking nuclei through the large four-chambered heart" ... makes my scientist's heart beat faster ::swoon::
- Why Does The Sun Really Shine TMBG K1 pointed me at "Youtuber" Charlie McDonnell's cover. In fact, TMBG has a whole album of science songs.
- The Galaxy Song Monty Python According to Wikipedia (hey, if corporations are people, I can anthropomorphosize wikipedia, right?) the facts are "tolerably accurate" :).
- Nine Planets Justin Roberts Ever since K1 was little, I've hummed this and other Justin Roberts' songs... they're fun! This was written before Pluto got downgraded, and as he wrote on his Facebook page: Pluto is a planet! I couldn't agree more.
- She Blinded Me With Science Thomas Dolby What, you thought I'd leave this one out?!

Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything
without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do
not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From Cali Scribe:
Two from last night's Top Comments: As the Cilantro Wars continue, BeninSC explains the reason for exploding manhole covers in response to Chrislove's comment, and side pocket gives another use for cilantro.
From LinSea:
In Richard Lyon's diary California To Consider Standard of Affirmative Sexual Consent, I nominate this thread begun by ontheleftcoast who succinctly ends it here.
From Progressive Witness:
From keefnight's excellent cartoon diary about gestures and gang signs comes an awesomely cosmic gang sign courtesy of jwinIL14.
From Yours Truly, brillig:
doorguy has a great reply to someone who lumped all of "them" separate from "us".
From Laura Clawson's Kansas senator refuses to say how often he's in Kansas, konving has the perfect response to the question "Who defines how many days is enough in Kansas?".
