Vladimir Putin, left, and Ted Cruz, right
Last week, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz celebrated the start of Vladimir Putin's Olympic games by introducing legislation to restrict marriage equality in the United States. And he hasn't given up his pursuit of Putin's approval:
“This administration is the most hostile-to-traditional-marriage administration this country has ever seen.”

Cruz cited the administration’s decision to recognize same-sex marriages performed in Utah before a Supreme Court order halted gay marriage in the state once more.

“The administration has been using the authority of the federal government to try to force states, to force federal recognition of marriages that state law prohibits,” Cruz said.

Sorry, Ted. Federal law trumps state law. A total of 1,300 same-sex couples were married in Utah before the Supreme Court stayed the ruling overturning the state's ban on marriage equality. Recognizing those lawful marriages isn't just the right thing to do, it's the only thing to do. Unless, of course, your name is Ted Cruz—or Vladimir Putin.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Hostile to "traditional marriage" (5+ / 0-)

Really, Ted, I mean, seriously? The administration that is headed by a man in his 22nd year of marriage to his first wife? With a Vice President whose only on his second wife because he was widowed (not because he developed a fondness for the "Appalachian Trail" - wink, wink, nudge, nudge)? Yeah, those are some horrible role models.

You know what, Ted, marriage equality doesn't stop or end one traditional marriage - not one. In fact, I don't know of anyone who is in favor of marriage equality who also believes we should forcibly divorce all those hetero couples out there. We support "traditional marriage." I come from a "traditional marriage" (35 years, ending in the death of my mother); both my parents came from traditional marriages (40 yrs. for maternal grandparents, 55 for the paternal set, both ended by the death of the husband), hell, some of my best friends are in traditional marriages, and I'm not doing anything to stop them (ok, so the only two couples I ever played matchmaker for both ended in divorce, but I did my part at the beginning).

But, Senator, please proceed. Last weekend that cute little actress Ellen Page came out, and has pretty much met with praise and support. A few days before that, Michael Sam came out and last weekend was greeted with a standing ovation from his fellow students at Missouri. So, keep attacking same-sex marriages. Keep fighting the 2004 election. Hell, why don't you go back and pull Pat Buchanan out of his mothballs and you can replay the 1992 election, because that will be as useful as your current stance in that "rebranding" effort.

    •  reagan (0+ / 0-)

I would like to add that if any administration was hostile to traditional marriage, it was Reagan, the one and only, as far as I know, divorced President, who also signed the no fault divorce law for California simply because he valued his life in politics more than his marriage.  This is documented fact.  That his one and only real wife, remember marriage one man, one woman, not one women at a time, did not want him to become a community organizer when he had a perfectly good acting career going.

Number of "traditional marriages" destroyed by allowing other forms of marriage:

In other words, the number of couples directly affected in a negative manner by modernizing a 2000 year old definition of a civil act is just slightly lower than the number of people tried and convicted of "voter fraud" over the past decade.

if you think about it Hitler went after the socialists first but when he found out that people saw socialism as a good thing, he renamed his party to include the word even though there was zero that was social about it.

He figured they were too stupid to know the difference anyway and if it gave him good cover to hide what his cadre of psychopathic, uber rich, corporate big wigs were doing so be it.

Same with communism... the word common is in there so it sounds like it should be a good thing and it is defined as by the common people... but it never is, it is always everything for the rich and let the poor starve.

So in reality, the way all despots use the words socialist and communist etc. it all means everything for the rich and let the poor starve and die....

Technically republicans could be called either since that is the way despots misuse the words and republicans are despots.

OK, Rubio stumbled around and found a crew with a camera. He quickly filled his pitcher with water, grabbed his bag, so as to be ready to throw anything he could find at the wall to see if it sticks.  His hand disappears into the bag and out it comes splat, the glob slides down the wall w/o even a slime trail.
Then the camera sweeps right and there is...yep, you guessed it, not to be outdone is Rand with feelthie pictures under his overcoat talking about Bill Clinton with a then, young over weight intern also throwing at the wall..did it stick, did it stick he whines.  He gives an audible sigh as his best effort falls flat.
Camera pans left...who is that...why it is Cruz, Teddy is foaming at the mouth, (again) and has already bitten his handlers numerous times...no one can understand his growlings as he slings even more at the wall.  It is just no one can tell what it is he is slinging. Kinda looks like...well it IS brown, steaming and it stinks. He misses the wall and covers his handlers, to their obvious displeasure.
The life of insanity in Republican politics marches on.

Someone needs to explain this "Traditional Marriage Hostility" that the right keeps going on about. Have hetersexual couple been prevented, by law, from marrying? Have their marriages been rendered invalid by Popularity Contest Vote because they aren't homosexual? Or have people protested outside their homes because they're married to the opposite sex?

Someone help me, here. Where the hell is this "hostility"?

... you call a skull, Teddy-boy - Support for gay marriage DOES NOT EQUATE to hostility towards traditional marriage!  I am a straight male, married to the same woman for 40 years (find me ONE Rethuglican Congress-critter who can make THAT claim!), and I STRONGLY support the right of ANY human to marry ANY OTHER human that they love - PERIOD!  My wife and I love one another, and our marriage could NEVER be weakened by some other guy marrying a guy, or some other woman marrying a woman.

I also have no fear that my wife would ever leave me for a woman ... but maybe THAT's the problem these fools have?

  •  Conservatives should love Russian. (0+ / 0-)

I cannot understand why Republicans say the things about Russia that they do. Perhaps it's because they have their eyes closed so tightly. Perhaps they're confused and believe the Cold War still going on. I really don't understand it, because if they would just open their eyes and look, what they would see is Russia is a bastion of conservatism. Just take a look at Russia.

They want immigrants because they see them as a cheap source of labor, but they don't want Muslims.

    They hate gays.

    They hate Muslims.

Employers can force employees to attend church or lose their job.

Employers can fire women from their job if they ever had an abortion.

Employers can fire workers that won't get married.

They want to force everyone to go to church. They want to force their Christian religion on everybody.

They want everyone to have guns so they can shoot virtually anyone they don't like.

Isn't this exactly what conservatives want to do here? Why go through all the trouble when everything they want is in Russia already? So it's really confusing that conservatives don't absolutely love Russia. It's the complete package.

I particularly don't understand Ted Cruz's position, since he's already a communist and all he would fit right in.
