Last week, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz
celebrated the start of Vladimir Putin's Olympic games by introducing legislation to restrict marriage equality in the United States. And
he hasn't given up his pursuit of Putin's approval:
“This administration is the most hostile-to-traditional-marriage administration this country has ever seen.”
Cruz cited the administration’s decision to recognize same-sex marriages performed in Utah before a Supreme Court order halted gay marriage in the state once more.
“The administration has been using the authority of the federal government to try to force states, to force federal recognition of marriages that state law prohibits,” Cruz said.
Sorry, Ted. Federal law trumps state law. A total of 1,300 same-sex couples were married in Utah before the Supreme Court stayed the ruling overturning the state's ban on marriage equality. Recognizing those lawful marriages isn't just the right thing to do, it's the only thing to do. Unless, of course, your name is Ted Cruz—or Vladimir Putin.
