More and better Democrats? Well, one out of two ain't bad, I suppose.
The Silver Fox, whose gubernatorial comeback slogan was once "Vote for the Crook--It's Important," has announced his return to politics, reality television having proved less than challenging.
Yes, it is, apparently, true. Ex-governor, ex-convict, ex-A&E star and still-rascal Edwin W. Edwards has gone on record saying he intends to run for Louisiana's 6th District congressional seat, currently held by Republican Bill Cassidy, who is favored (though not by all) to beat his fellow pachyderms in primary and face Mary Landrieu for Senate.
As an 86-year-old, thrice-wed convicted felon, Edwards is indeed an unlikely candidate, but his popularity in the state and the district is surprisingly long-lived. If indeed he runs, his name rec (call it notoriety if you wish) will immediately put him in the state and national spotlight, eclipsing Richard Lieberman, the bluish canine LaPlace lawyer/realtor Dem already in the race.
There are a million reasons to despair if Edwards really makes the jump. We've already a dog in the fight. We really don't want a famed scandal magnet on our team.
However, the guv's fame (and, it is assumed, fundraising power) could well make this longshot seat competitive, forcing the GOP to spend on a seat they'd likely ignore without such a well-known challenger.
Considering all the angles, I don't know if I'd welcome Edwards' entrance into the 6th District race, but if he does, I certainly plan to enjoy the show.
