Working on social media and public relations for 350Marin and thought I'd share here my draft press release for others to look at, and possibly work from, to publicize the upcoming rally in Sacramento.
My local media plan includes writing up blog posts for local Patches, submitting Public Service Announcements to local radio and community tv, posting to online and print calendars, submitting an Op-Ed by head of 350Marin anti-Fracking committee to the County's main newspaper, and postings to smaller publications online town hall sites.
I'm also planning on sending out copies of the press release to local churches and synagogues, community centers, volunteer organizations, environmental groups and libraries and asking that they post on bulletin boards or write up in their own publications if they have the time.
Thoughts on fine tuning and your ideas on how we can do our part to make this rally a huge event.
My sample is below the fold.
For Immediate Release:
Join 350Marin at March 15 “Don’t Frack California” Rally
San Rafael, CA. February 28. 2014. 350Marin is bussing up to Sacramento March 15 to join thousands of Californians from across the state to pressure Governor Brown to stop fracking in the “Golden State.”
The rally, which begins on the Capitol Lawn at 1pm, will feature celebrities and speakers from across the state who will share personal stories about how fracking is impacting their communities.
"It’s time Governor Brown stops doing the bidding of Big Oil and starts listening to the people of California who have nothing to gain from fracking and far too much to lose,” said Richard Gray of the 350Marin Stop Fracking Committee.
Hydraulic fracturing or fracking involves extreme pressure pumping of water and toxic chemicals into mile-deep shale rock formations to fracture the rock and release shale oil.
Millions of gallons of precious fresh water for are used for each frack job, and potent greenhouse gasses like methane and benzene are released as by-products, adding to the climate impact of the oil which will be refined and burned into our atmosphere, threatening the health of wildlife, local communities and the safety of our water resources. The oil recovered is the dirtiest on the planet.
The fracking process threatens aquifers underlying California’s food producing Salinas and Central Valley and could lubricate the San Andreas fault zone, with potentially dire consequences.
350Marin is working with Californians Against Fracking, a coalition of 150 environmental, business, health, agriculture, labor, political, and environmental justice organizations working to win a statewide end to fracking in California.

350Marin is part of the international global grassroots campaign 350.org a movement of climate-focused projects, actions and projects engineered at the community level in over 188 countries.
The organization was named for the scientific ratio 350 parts per million (ppm). This number represents the amount of carbon dioxide molecules most scientists and climate experts have determined is safe to support life and prevent catastrophic climate change. Last year, for the first time in recorded history, the concentration of atmospheric CO2 reached 400 ppm.
