A daily series, Connect! Unite! Act! seeks to create face-to-face networks in each congressional district. Groups regularly socialize but also get out the vote, support candidates and engage in other local political actions that help our progressive movement grow and exert influence on the powers-that-be. Visit us every morning at 7:30 A.M. Pacific Time to see how you can get involved. The comment thread is fun and light-hearted, but we're serious about moving the progressive political agenda forward.

The orange pinpoints are the location of each organized group of Kossacks.
If you'd like to join a group, click on a point and a box will pop up showing contact links.
If you'd like to start a group, contact navajo for instructions.

(Diarist's note: In case you forgot, most of the country (except the non-Navajo Nation part of Arizona) sprang forward into Daylight Savings Time last night. That explains why you need an extra cup of coffee this morning.)

What was your favorite cereal when you were a kid?

"They're grr-r-reat!" Yes, it's true. My favorite breakfast cereal when I was a kid was Kellogg's Frosted Flakes™. As it turns out, Frosted Flakes are not great. They are full of stuff one probably shouldn't eat. They are likely made from Monsanto's GMO corn and their Nutrition Facts (right) speak for themselves. But back when I was a kid in the 50's and 60's, they tasted grr-r-reat...to me, anyway. And, back then, they hadn't GMO'd the corn yet. [Insert cereal killer joke here]

I could eat them straight out of the box, or I could eat them with milk. Eating Frosted Flakes with milk required exquisite timing. I liked them al dente. I didn't want them hard and crunchy, but I also didn't want them to get soggy either. So it required a continuous effort and intense concentration to capture them all before they became the consistency of wet scraps of paper. Once I had scooped out each and every flake, I got to drink the sugar-infused milk by lifting the bowl to my eager lips.

I tried other flashy, Johnny-come-lately concoctions like Lucky Charms with their cute little marshmallow moons, stars, and hearts. I went briefly cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs, but the chocolate flavor was awful, even though it purported to be Hershey's. I never liked Fruit Loops or Cap'n Crunch or Trix or most other exotic brands. Chex was only good in Chex Mix. I didn't really care for it without nuts, tiny crackers, pretzels and salt. I did eat some oatmeal in my day, but it was never my favorite thing. As a proud Georgia native, I eat grits with salt and pepper, never sugar. I don't really consider grits a cereal, although I suppose that, technically, they are. I have never tried Cream of Wheat, but something tells me I'm not missing much.

I did like some of the less sugary brands like Rice Krispies and Shredded Wheat and Cheerios, but I added sugar anyway. I have never been a big fan of granola and other "healthy" cereals like müeslix. They're too hard to chew, and they make me feel like a ruminating bovine. These days I rarely eat cereal. We usually have some Honey Nut Cheerios around because that's what my sons like, and I have eaten a bowl on rare occasions, like when I have the screaming munchies at 1 am and there is nothing else in the house to eat.

I suspect most people's tastes change as they begin to realize that all that sugar and crap really isn't good for them. But I also suspect that a fair number of adults still eat sugary kids' cereals. What about you?

?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

You can add a private note to this diary when hotlisting it:
