It's been about three years since I started writing these pieces for the Readers & Book Lovers Group. During those three years I've tried to present a sampling of some of the significant writers in the fields of Science Fiction and Fantasy.
I've tried to highlight a work by every important writer in that field with whom I'm familiar. There are many I've missed; my favorite authors tend to be the ones I read in high school and college, and my familiarity with works published after the Carter Administration kind of dwindles. I've had woefully little exposure to the more recent trends in SF, or of some of the notable female writers in the field.
But within those limitations, I've tried to represent a cross-section of the literature of imagination; and I appreciate the feedback I've gotten from the readers who have enjoyed my pieces.
And you can probably guess where this is going. This is going to be a GCW diary, isn't it?
Not quite.
But I am going to take another break from my weekly synopses of science fiction and fantasy novels. For one thing, they take an awful lot of time and I want to work on some other projects. For another, I'm starting to run out of books I want to profile. Oh, there are more out there, to be sure. I haven't done Anne McCaffrey yet, and I really ought to do one on Arthur C. Clarke.
But on the whole, I want to take a break from the series. I hope to pop in from time to time, as I did with my last hiatus, to post individual pieces, but I'm not going to do any more multi-part in-depth examinations of books the way I have.
I hope other contributors will feel free to add posts of their own under the series title. Anyone so interested can Message me to arrange the scheduling.
